<title>Liesel Meminger is the protagonist of The Book Thief. She is a nine-year-old girl living in the time of the Holocaust. She copes with the loss of her family as she tries to see the brighter side of life. Because of this, she tends to act bitter towards the other characters, but learns they too have their own share of losses. Throughout the book, she steals, reads, and writes, she evolves from a powerless character to a powerful character who deeply empathizes with the voiceless. Before her death, Liesel used her knowledge of reading to write a novel of her own, The Book Thief.</title>

<title>Max Vandenburg is a young Jewish man who was formerly known as &quot;the Jewish fist fighter&quot; when he was a child. He takes refuge in the basement of the Hubermann home to hide away from the Nazis. He seemed to be frightened during the events of the Holocaust as Liesel Meminger found his book full of disturbing images. Max, similar to Liesel, enjoys reading and embracing new family. He loves creating works of art that not only allow him an outlet for his imprisoned state, but brings immense joy into the lives of those around him.</title>

<title>Death is the narrator of The Book Thief. He is fascinated by humans and the colors of the world, but he struggles throughout the novel to decipher how humans are capable of so much ugliness and so much beauty. He hates how there are mysteries around because he knows in his mind how they all end. He takes an interest in Liesel following her story. Death is often humorous, informative, or dark asides. In the end, although he shows his interest in humans, he reveals that he is haunted by them everywhere.</title>

<title>Rudy Steiner is a young boy and best friend to Liesel Meminger. He is one of six children and is known for painting himself black like Jesse Owens after the 1936 Olympics and running the tract at Hub. He can be sweet, brave, encouraging, cocky, loyal, caring, fun, and unusual. He becomes a love interest to Liesel as he often asks her for a kiss. Even after his death, Liesel is heartbroken and admits her true feelings above his corpse. </title>

<title>Rosa Hubermann, better known as Mama, is the foster mother of Liesel. She lives with her husband Hans Hubermann in a house on Himmel Street in Molching, Germany. She is a very strict and obedient woman who is known for her catchphrase &quot;Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!&quot; But, as Death explains, she has a very big heart, and does, in fact, care for the members of her family.</title>
