Restorative Discipline for Schools by Jennifer Rorie

How can you begin to complement our school discipline practices with the understanding that we must reach our youth at a core level? Remember that middle school is a critical time in their young lives where it is possible to turn around negative behaviors.

The student population at Westlawn is filled with talented/gifted students. Unfortunately, they do not know this about themselves and they feel a sense of disconnection from the Black history with inventors, scientists and so forth. We must enlighten, connect and restore them to who they are. It is then they will change the way they think.

I think the biggest thing we need to remember with restorative discipline is that it focuses on the harm that was done and "righting" the wrong. Getting to the root of the problem involves figuring out the "why" for each and every behavior. Positive behavior has a "why" as does negative. Once you figure out the antecedent of each behavior, you can get to the reason for the behavior and in turn focus on how to teach a new behavior. It is important to make sure they are aware of why a behavior is happening as well because they may just react rather than thinking through the process.

The students must have a relationship first. It appears that the students that I have the most positive relationship with are the ones who respond the best to correction. Alternately, the students who I feel do not have the best relationship with me are the students who do not respond to correction as well.

When I think of restoration I think of a vintage vehicle that is ready to be new. It was once new in its ways and is now ready to be new once again. With certain students discipline has never been established and it is more likely our job is to establish discipline.

Relationship building. Our students have trust issues, and when we break through their trust issues we are well on our way.
