WOW. This was such an emotionally jarring chapter. When it began, I felt awful for Curley's wife, because I thought she was being oppressed. I also thought that Lennie was monster for not heeding the instructions and accidentally killing his puppy. But after Lennie accidentally killed Curley's wife, I felt awful that nobody understood how Lennie's brain worked. Nobody bothered to observe that Lennie was easily overwhelmed, and the best way to give him a command was to convey it calmly and peacefully. And I think Curley's wife was much too vain about her hair anyways.

I feel like I should have seen this coming, due to the concerning amount of other times Lennie has accidentally killed an animal, but I was still very shocked. The fact that he accidentally murdered someone makes me feel awful, especially because Lennie is always so innocent. Although, at this point in the book, I'm finding it harder and harder to forgive Lennie's accidents. I think he should have learned by now that if he's too rough--especially with his giant figure--very bad things could happen, and those bad things are going to get him punished, even when he never means to do it.

I understand that he is mentally disabled but it still frustrates me so much how he can't see the situation and how maybe he shouldn't shake someone back and forth while holding their head to get them to quiet down. I'm also mad that Lennie killed the dog and I'm mad at Curley's wife for struggling harder when it was obvious Lennie would let go when she quieted down.

I was extremely surprised by what Lennie did in this chapter. I had a feeling something horrible was going to happen when Curley's wife sat next to Lennie, but I did not think Lennie would kill her. Early in the book George foreshadowed that Curley's wife was a "trap", and now Lennie killing Curley's wife has caused a large problem in the story (plans are changing). I also feel bad for Candy, because he really wanted to live on the land.

My first thought is poor Lennie and Curly's wife. From the beginning of the book, Steinbeck portrayed Lennie's love for soft items in many instances. When Curly's wife let him touch her hair, I knew that it would be his downfall. Furthermore, I feel so sad for Curly's wife who just felt all alone and yearned for a better life.

Each person George and Lennie talked to said every man came in with a dream of land and working for themself but none of them never came close. They would either lose their money or something would go wrong. Expectedly, Lennie messes up. George also fails as his role is to look after Lennie, but he gets too caught up with having fun. Mrs. Curley could not control herself to stay away from the men even though she clearly understood Lennie's unpredictability and strength when he hurt Curley's hand. It is not necessarily Lennie's fault as he could not help himself from doing certain actions. No one cared to understand Lennie's situation, rather, they just responded to his disobedience with anger.

While it was on a larger scale, I did expect something tragic to take place as Lennie's actions are always unpredictable. From nearly the beginning, we've been waiting to see when they would have to run to the bushes. George always told him, "hide in the bushes." I knew the time would come eventually. I'm angry with most of the characters, but at the same time, I am filled with sympathy and sadness. Everyone had something to lose, and everyone lost it. Lennie lost all hope, George lost his dream for a new life, and Curley's wife lost any chance to earn respect or dignity. Overall, I pity the men on the ranch and the importance of the decisions they made.
