My grandson is a kindergartner and has a speech impediment. He's been working with a speech therapist at school and on the weekends. He is getting so much better! The underneath his tongue should have been snipped, and no one caught it until the dentist said something recently. Caitie was too nervous that it would set him back too much, so she opted against surgery but did it for the baby when they realized he had it as well. He speaks so much clearer than Jace at times, which is heartbreaking. Thankfully, none of my students appear to have any issues with speech that I have noticed.

Speech and Language students get pulled from my classroom multiple times per week for therapy. This can be a barrier if they miss instructional time. They also don't like to be called on in class to read or answer questions as much as their peers.

Jeff Golliday -

It's an IDEA disability category that involves communication deficits in speaking that often manifest in stuttering or language/voice impairment that adversely effects educational performance. The causes are varied (and sometimes unknown). Speech & Language Impairments often lead to bullying, withdrawal and non-participation due to low confidence/self-esteem. As with any disability, teachers must create a "safe environment" that respects differences in students and enables those affected to feel valued and build confidence when given opportunities to improve with their speaking.

Students with speech and language impairment might not always struggle with class work and assignments, but could struggle in the classroom setting in many other ways such as socially and classroom participation.

I have had many students who would be pulled from class to work with our schools speech therapist and it was easy for me to identify struggles with these students. They often felt very comfortable around their friends, but in classroom settings, especially group work with student they did not know, they remained quiet and would work through the computer or some other means of silent participation.

It feels important to create opportunities for these students in order to help them feel comfortable in their classroom. The video suggests finding safe times for them to read aloud and work with others to discuss ideas.

Bri Hobbs

Speech and Language Impairment refers to the difficulties with communication that can impact someone's ability to speak, understand or express using language. Speech impairments to me seem like things like studdering or voice issues but Language issues could be difficulties with understanding or expressing words or thoughts verbally.

I have several kids in my preschool class who struggle with speech and language and can have a tough time communicating. Taking them out for speech therapy is important to help with these issues, but it can also mean they miss out on class time, which might slow down their progress in other subjects. Students with speech delays also can get very frustrated when teachers or other students don't understand them.
