Was born towards the end of 1548. He was the most famous composer in 16th century in Spain. He also, was one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Victoria was not only a composer, but also an accomplished organist and singer as well as a Catholic priest. However, he preferred the life of a composer to that of a performer.

His mother was of Jewish descent. From a young age he may have received musical lessons from Escobedo while he was in the city of Avila. However, it was Palestrina who perfected his art.

In 1572 he published his first book of motets "Motecta quae 4, 5, 6, 8 vocibus concinuntur" in Venice dedicated to the cardinal-archbishop of Augsburg Otto von Truchsess von Waldburg, great benefactor and patron of Victoria.

In 1575 he took minor orders (lector and exorcist) and was ordained a priest on August 28 in the church of Santo Tomas de los Ingleses. The following year, 1576, he published his second anthology: "Liber Primus qui Missas, Psalmos, Magnificat ... aliaque complectitur".

(1) The music is of a very high quality.

(2) The Tenor and Bass lines in measures 14-16 remind me of a section in Victoria’s “Domine non sum dignus.”

(3) The 3/4 section toward the end is reminiscent of pieces by Victoria and other composers of that time, such as Jacobus Handl-Gallus.

(4) The incipit at the beginning is certainly something Victoria would have done, and comes directly from the
Gregorian version. In fact, if you carefully examine the Gregorian melody—such as the phrase “Sancta Maria”—you’ll see that many melodies are based on the plainsong. As a Roman Catholic priest, Victoria loved to use the plainsong melodies in his polyphonic compositions.

(5) The composer says “JESUS CHRISTUS” instead of “Jesus,” which reminds me of what was done to the Holy Name in Victoria’s “O Magnum Mysterium.”

(6) Victoria did not compose a 4-voice AVE MARIA, except for this one. Therefore, it fills a lacuna in his repertoire.
