"She was looked at however, and with some admiration; for, in her own hearing, two gentlemen pronounced her to be a pretty girl. Such words had their due effect; she immediately thought the evening pleasanter than she had found it before-her humble vanity was contented - she felt more obliged to the two young men for this simple praise than a true quality heroine would have been for fifteen sonnets in celebration of her charms, and went to her chair in good humour with everybody, and perfectly satisfied with her share of public attention" (Austen 9).

1. The use of the third person filters through Catherine and we can see her viewpoint of her life.
2. As a young girl, Catherine was awkward, thin, plain and pale. Growing up, she starts to become pretty and people notice her.
3. This is ironic because Catherine still does not think she is pretty, but two boys notice her beauty.
4. Jane Austen hints at making fun of her Catherine, but it also helps us understand the life Catherine lives in.

Frederick and Isabella have been messing around, leaving Catherine worried with the outcome when James returns.
4. Catherine has come a long way from the beginning of the book. She always used to shy and quiet, but with the right people she comes out of her shell and starts to speak her mind.
