The US is much different than how it is now. They have made everyone equal by literally bringing down the people who are "better" than what the average person should be.
If someone is too strong, they have to wear heavy weights in order to make it harder for them to operate. If you take out some of the weights, the consequences are pretty miserable. You get a huge Fine and time in prison. If you are too smart, they put a device in your head that when you start to think it rings a sound to make you stop. If you are too pretty, you have to wear an ugly looking mask so no one can see what you actually look like. The society of this futuristic US is absolutely unfair, but in reality it is equal. By achieving this equality, no one has the need to be jealous of another person or be in competition with someone else.

There is a HUGE different between equality within the law and equality within the person. In the U.S. today, we are striving more than every to have equal rights for everyone. A person is a person, no matter their race, gender, looks, abilities, etc. However, in this story, "equality" is achieved by bringing down hard workers and raising up those who are far behind. For example, they give pretty people masks to make them uglier, strong people weights to make the weaker, and smart people devices to make them dumber. The talents and efforts one is capable of should be praised, because we are all different. A good analogy for this is we all deserve the same starting line, but we aren't all going to finish in the same place.

On page 299, the author states, "Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains.

The state of U.S. society is equal because of the actions made by the United States Handicapper General. That force has achieved equality by placing handicaps on the people who have a physical or mental advantage in any way. One handicap that is used is a mask to make the beautiful, less beautiful. For example, "She must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous." (Pg. 301,302) Equality has been achieved by these handicaps because they assure no one can have an advantage over another, which makes everyone equal.

The state of U.S. society in the story remains unequal. The U.S. gave a valiant try to reach equality, but it is still left unequal. To start, the masks beautiful people wear, on page 301-302 it is stated that you could tell the ballerina was beautiful because her mask was hideous. This tells us that even with masks on there are levels of beauty, this then creates more inequality as people would see those without masks, or less gross masks as beautiful, due to the fact that no one can remove the masks eventually the beauty standards would change. The bags to equalize strength also just create a greater inequality, as the people with them would eventually grow strong enough to simply carry them as normal, however if they didn't it would still be unfair as in the story on page 301 it demonstrates that the weighted sacks can cause pain, pain that average people like Hazel don't have to deal with. In addition, the earpieces that disrupt thought also create a gap, because Hazel can mostly remember what she and George were talking about, while George has the memory of a goldfish. Overall they tried and failed to reach equality

For example, we know that Harrison Bergeron was the strongest, smartest, most attractive person in that society based on his restraints. He wore so many masks his appearance was described as "Halloween". Compared to people like the ballerinas, he is considered more attractive since he wear more masks. He is stronger than the average people because he wears more weights than anyone else. However, the men and women in this community are "brain dead" zombies in their own aspect. The people living in the US at the time who are above average mental and physical capacity are restrained and have their thoughts erased every so often, that cue's a sound from an earpiece that they are required, by law, to wear. This is how the now corrupt government has achieved equality. Due to the fact that people, with no thoughts, and no physical power can rebel against the Handicapper General.

However, by handicapping the citizens talents they make them less than the average human. For example, constantly there are beautiful ballerinas being handicapped with hideous masks, therefore making them more ugly then the average, non-handicapped person. This is the same with all natural abilities the citizens have. Therefore, equality is not reached but considerably worsened.

Everything seems rather peaceful (until Harrison disrupts the peace) because there is no competition between people. This supposedly ideal, completely equal society has been achieved through the use of handicaps. Those who are above average are forced to don these handicaps that will make them average. For example, the ballerina who read the announcement on the TV was required to make her voice raspy and gruff, because her real voice was considered to be too beautiful. This requirement forced the ballerina below average- as did her other handicaps. The entire mindset of handicaps helping create an equal society, rather than the ideal society with complete equality, birthed a society with a deceiving veil of corrupted equality- one where equality has seemingly taken root, but, in actuality, was never there to begin with.

These handicaps regulate each individuals ability to perform physically. Other examples are George's devices implanted into his ears. George has a mental intelligence ability marked as above average, in order to balance his ability he is forced to wear a device that projects a sound which interrupts his thoughts and forces him to forget what he was thinking about. Devices like these, as well as handicaps are forced onto almost each and every person to achieve equality in this futuristic society.

The state of the future U.S. society is completely equal. The equality is accomplished from the United States handicapper general that has devoted their life to provide equality throughout the country. The equality is maintained by a thing called handicaps. They are a system in which people with a higher physical or mental state is given to "bring them down" to the rest of the society (pg.299) . For example, Harrison's father George Bergeron has to wear a sack by law which drags him down in a way that he is physically equal to everyone else. There are multiple devices and objects worn by the people of the futuristic United States in order to wear down people of physical and mental power to the people of lower power in order to equal out the society.

The state of U.S. society is 100% equal. The equality has been achieved by putting handicaps on people who are smarter, better looking, or more athletic in Harrison's case. These handicaps that they add are transmitters in the ear that send out loud sharp noises in their ears, sash-weighs to weigh them down, and if they are attractive, something to make them look a little more ugly.(pg.299 and 300). For example, George has an ear transmitter thing that sends out a loud noise because he is mentally smarter than other people. But Hazel does not have this because she is average. (pg. 300)

The state of U.S. society spoken of in this book is 100% equal. This means that every single person was equal and had nothing to compete with others with. This was achieved by implementing handicaps on people with tremendous qualities, that could put them above others. These could be, intelligence, looks, athleticism, and more. For example with people who are more "intelligent" than others are given a ear device to spurt noises in ones ear to distract them and not allow them to take advantage of their smarts. They also add weight to the people, and possibly masks to hide ones good looks. For example the ballerina has weights and a mask on to hide her beauty and hopefully stunt her dancing abilities (page 302)

The sate of U.S. society is equality. Complete, total, unquestionable equality. Every person is now equally as smart, athletic, funny, and any other characteristic you can think of. This was achieved by the way of handicaps. Some examples being ugly masks for the good looking, transmitters that sent out sharp noises for the intelligent, and birdshot for the athletic. These handicaps are only for the above average, however. On page 299 we are introduced to Hazel as, " perfectly average," with her thoughts being short and spasmodic. Even she admits, "'Who knows better'n I do what normal is?'"

This futuristic society of the U.S. revolves around this concept of complete equality. If there is someone with bad eyesight, everyone must have bad eyesight too, by wearing glasses that blur your vision. This society uses handicaps for the people who are stronger, smarter, or more talented than someone else. It is cruel punishment for anyone who isn't "normal", which their idea of normal is unreasonable. People who are strong must carry around these weights that can be hundreds of pounds. And people who are pretty wear ugly masks. The U.S. is reaching equality by taking the good qualities in people and hide them under less desirable things.

The USA has been manipulated so that everyone is equal. This equality is achieved by having handicaps so that everyone has equal abilities. For example, in the story, the dancers all have to wear masks, and the more beautiful the person, the worse the mask. Instead of working on making everybody better, they degrade people to the 'normal' low. George and Hazel are also examples of this handicapping. George is smarter than the normal human, so he has to wear a transmitter in his ear so every few seconds, a loud noise erupts his train of thought. Hazel on the other hand has a normal level on intellect, so she doesn't have to wear any handicaps. The state of the USA is that everyone lives in fear on inequality, and people would rather wear painful handicaps than live in a world with competition.

This has been achieved by the invention of handicaps. Each handicap is designed to hinder someones specific ability. For example, George has an above average intellect, so he has to wear a mental handicap, which will interrupt his thinking every twenty seconds, making it impossible for him to make somebody else feel bad about their lower intelligence quotient. Hazel on the other hand has an average intelligence, and her handicap gives her short term memory loss.

The U.S. has finally come down to terms of what in the story the government thinks "equality" is. Nobody has any advantages to anyone else and everyone basically is put into more disadvantages than given equality. Stronger people have to wear sacks with lead balls and people who are handsome and beautiful have to wear masks and possibly disfigure their faces to be "equal" with everyone else (299-300). The society of this fictional U.S. has confused equality with equity, by handicapping everyone and not just giving them the same rights, and allow their own genetic advantages and skills.

It is bad because they are changing who people are to become more like everyone else but on the bright side, it is a good thing because then everyone gets to experience what others are going through. Equality has been achieved by making everyone have a handicap ex; Harrison getting his eyebrows shaved off, and beautiful people have to wear masks. This is creating equality because it is making everyone feel the same but not in the most effective way.

Any person who processes talents and qualities that make them greater than they're peers will be subject to handicaps. Handicaps limit or entirely take away what makes that person them. The goal of this totalitarian ideal is to make everyone play on the same playing field, thus creating an "equal" society in a much lieral sense. This in action today would require that anyone in my class that achieves higher academic abilities would be forced into the average percentile. Possibility by having to wear an ear piece that makes noises when they think smarter.
