Hi gang. I will be studying International Relations and Law. I'll be developing an educational part of the expo called something like "Melting Pot" or something more catchy. This is not intended to replace any other educational aspects of the expo such as Cathy's, but focuses purely on a Cultural Workshop.

Objectives of Activity:
To Educate Australians about middle-eastern culture (do's and dont's)
To educate refugees and recent migrants about Australian culture (do's and dont's)
To provide information which increases the safety, togetherness and wellbeing of all community members

What is involved:
-Prior to the expo, community leaders and elders from the middle-eastern community will be consulted and provide information about customary practice, its origins and importance to middle eastern people. This information will be collated and turned into educational material for the event.
-The local community will be consulted and their main concerns about refugee influx will be identified to be discussed during the training sessions.
-Police, sexual health practitioners, religious leaders and other industry experts will provide cultural training to the community.
-During the event, sessions under an hour will take place which involve roleplaying, audience participation, demonstrations and similar visual styles of teaching.

Target Audience (dependant on which session):
Adults from the refugee or migrant community
Adults from the Australian community
Senior High School students

Specific Sessions: (preliminary ideas)
-How to interact with Australian Police and/or security personnel (what to do if you witness a crime or are arrested)
-How to interact in Australian workplaces
-How to prepare food safely in the workplace
-Gender in Australian culture
-Sexual health/dating workshop
-How to respond to Racism in Australia
-Middle Eastern greetings, family structure and social culture
-Preparation of resumes/CV's, how to conduct job interviews, how to enrol in study and where to seek employment in Australia
-What actually happens inside mosques? how can positive religious activity be used to benefit the wider community?

Final product for assessment:
-A programme which provides scheduling and an overview of each education session
-Detailed Consultation plan
-Rationale and community benefit analysis (including research)

This is basically the main thing I will work on fam. remembering that we dont have to organise all the practical aspects of the expo, only those things which are relevant to our discipline which we decide upon individually. We are allowed to have administrative aspects of the event which are left completely untouched.

This will also involve keeping up to date with local policies and to shape the workplace to cater for patrons and the community alike.

Time Management
As there will be much to consider when organising a Children's Literary Exhibition to be able to manage my time will help as it would when organising different events the library may hold whilst maintaining business as usual and any unexpected events that may occur.

Being able to engage children at their level
An Info and Awareness Expo with a Childrens section will draw many different people of different ages and different languages, so to be able to engage children to participate in activities which will be required whether I work in a public library or an educational library will result in the flexibility to work with children at their level and in a way that works for them.

Thinking quick!
Children are unpredictable, and sometimes accidents occur, so to be able to be a creative problem solver and thinking quickly whilst maintaining story time will be a transferable skill from library to info and awareness expo.

The first step in establishing social media profiles for any event is to identify which platforms would be best suited to your event. Instagram is very ‘in’ at the moment. In fact it is one of the fastest growing apps today with about 300 million active users as of 2014 (Statista 2014), so for that reason, it could be very advantageous in increasing event exposure and generally raising awareness for refugees in Australia. This blog post had some great information about using Instagram to promote a community event.

The Refugee Info & Awareness Epxo is a celebration of the rich and unique culture that makes Australia in the 21st century a dynamic and ground breaking melting pot of Innovation, Arts and Industry. It is our intention to bring communities together in a fun and safe environment, but to also discuss some of the more difficult problems within our society.

One of the primary themes of this event is to bring about awareness regarding the legal rights of Refugees. Australia is a member and signatory to the United Nations convention of 1951 and the 1967 protocol. Under the convention a refugee is defined as someone who is outside their country and cannot return due to a well founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or social group.

Our project seeks to educate and empower the community and contribute to the knowledge and awareness required for all Australians to move forward and build a more prosperous life.By providing an environment where genuine encounters between cultures can take place organically. by celebrating diversity and identity together we hope to prove that we have more similarities than differences and that together we can step into the future as a united Australia. This movement towards harmony begins at a local level, which is why we have chosen this as our Community Arts Project.
