My eighth grade year was coming to a close. This meant my freshman year was slowly creeping up. The teachers tell you all about high school and how it’s supposed to be the best four years of your life. They also tell you not to screw up your freshman year because it sets your GPA. I was slowly thinking in my head, “How am I going to survive high school? It sounds terrible!” That entire summer I was slowly preparing for my life to end, I was fresh out of middle school and I over exaggerated everything. On top of my freshman year approaching, I had also made the varsity cheer team and I wasn’t quite sure how I’d handle both cheer and school. I spent nights contemplating high school and asking the upperclassmen on my team all about it. They told me everything my teachers told me, don’t mess around and to take high school seriously. After that, I was stressing the rest of the summer and then my freshman orientation came around. I had a new problem: how was I going to find all of my classes? Eventually I learned where everything was and I made it through the orientation. The first day of high school was finally here and I learned some valuable things that year. Now my junior year is coming to a close and I’m still learning how to survive but that’s okay.

Showing up is a very important thing when it comes to surviving high school. There will be days where you feel like staying home and doing nothing but those are the days you need to push through and go anyways. You only get so many absences per semester so use them wisely. School is much harder if you're never there.

There are plenty of things to avoid in high school, most vary from grade to grade. As an underclassmen, the main thing you should avoid is upperclassmen. As upperclassmen, you avoid the administrators. In general, you avoid your principal when you're out of dress code (when you hear "hello ms. can you come here?") you get to class much faster. In addition to avoiding administration and people older than you, you also should avoid procrastination. Procrastionation is a high schoolers worst enemy. Trust me, senioritis as a freshman is defiantly a thing and should be avoided at all costs.

The first item on this list is gum. Don't let people know you have it though, or else they'll steal it. The second thing is deodorant. Now now, that seems like common sense, but when it gets hot and there are 200+ students walking through the hallways, you sweat. A lot. Third, you need an eraser. In high school you fail way more than you succeed, but nothing's permanent so erase the bad grades and bad decisions and move on. Lastly, you need tissues. You'll cry, no doubt about it, and sometimes your teachers won't except your tear-streaked 20 page final, so you need some tissues to clean up your act.
