The history of the Puruhá people is marked by their resistance, struggle for autonomy and recognition of their rights in society.

With the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, these people were subjugated, suffering the exploitation of their lands, the imposition of the Catholic religion and the reduction of their populations due to diseases introduced by the colonizers.

After Ecuador's independence in 1830, the Puruhá continued to face discrimination and marginalization in the new republic. Their lands were usurped and their culture despised. However, they also participated in political and social movements in search of justice and equity.
