Problem of the Month

We worked on Problem of the Month this week. I am almost done with the packet. In the packet we work on probability, percentages, division, numbers, and much more. I am on Level E right now, but it is a long problem to figure out. We have a different schedule now, where we spend half the time rechecking our work and doing some more, then reviewing our new answers with our group. If there is time after we are done discussing with our group we write new answers with the group.

Multiplying Decimals

This week we learned to multiply decimals by whole numbers and other decimals. Our strategy is to do the normal algorithm at first, with no decimals, then count the decimal places in both factors. That number is the amount of decimal places in the answer. We've also been working on other strategies but that one is my favorite.

This week we did the colonial project. I finished my report on Delaware (did you know it was named the Breadbasket Colony?) and I started a menu based on colonial foods and prices (tea cost a lot back then!). I also started a timeline of the times the colonies were founded.

We have been doing a unit on heat in science. We have been learning about convection currents, radiation, reradiation, and conduction throughout this unit. We watched a Bill Nye video and wrote down some notes on Thursday. I learned that something really large, like an ice sculpture, actually has more heat energy than a tiny match because the ice sculpture is larger and thus has more mass, more energy, more heat.

We have been doing a lot of book groups this week. We did three assignments this week and had to write sticky notes. My sticky notes were connection, visualizing, and questioning sticky notes. When we were done writing our sticky notes we typed them in on Edmodo to an assignment and also to our whole book group. We also responded to our other fellow book group members.

We have been working on and finishing our opinion essays on chocolate milk, if it should be served in schools. I think it should be served in schools because it is nutritious, kids like it, and that it is healthier than other drinks kids like. I finished my essay yesterday and I think it came out good.
