How do you feel about kindergarteners reading the majority of their text on a screen as opposed to holding a book in their hands? by Hannah Moellers

Kindergarteners reading mainly online and not tactile is a little disheartening for me. I think that technology used as a tool to help read is great, especially for children who struggle with reading. However, I would be lying if I said that it didn't make me a little sad to think that they don't get circle story times or things of that nature much anymore.

I personally do not like that kindergarteners are doing most of their reading on a screen. I think it is so important that children get the opportunity to read from a book and not always from a screen. One of my favorite things from elementary school was going to the library and getting books and reading them in class. I think it is something every child should get to experience

I find this troubling. A large component of early learning is tactile response and processing. This is lacking in online formats. In addition, devices can cause eye fatigue and other vision issues. Being exposed to that much screen time at a young age is not healthy.

I don’t think students should be using technology to read. I feel like that is a prime time for their brain to develop. Reading it from a screen is just engaging their minds to be focused on the screen.

Kindergarteners reading only on tablets is something I do not agree with. I feel as if having an actual book is important. Yes, technology is important and super helpful in many ways, but it should not be our only resource being used in the classroom.
