In the beginning of the story, the characterization of Charlie is that of a naive mentally disabled man who is motivated to be smarter by the promise of an operation. He would commonly misspell words and forgo punctuation in simple words such as "didn't", which he would spell as "dint". Along with his poor academic intelligence; Charlie was bad at comprehending how people saw him. He was taken advantage of and publicly humiliated by his co-workers Joe and Frank. Despite this, Charlie is relatively happy with his situation besides the fact he can't beat Algernon in the maze.

At this point in the story, Charlie was just given the "tv" by Dr. Strauss which is when we really start to see growth and development out of Charlie. He got better at spelling and learning at such a rapid rate that Charlie is now a genius. With this also came a change in character for the worst. Charlie has become just like the people that used to make fun of him when he was challenged (which he admits to himself after the situation with the boy in the restaurant). Also during this time is where we see Charlie's relationships with others begin to fall apart. He steps away from his job and starts to question the doctors true intelligence and motives.

After seeing a strange shift in Algernon's behavior and his eventual death; Charlie now knows that his newfound intellect will leave him just as fast as it came. This really took a toll on him as he fully isolates himself even from Miss Kinnian whom he is fond of. But after hitting rock bottom and his intelligence rapidly fading is when we truly see the final character shift from Charlie back to his old honest self, but with newfound wisdom after his journey. He makes amends with Mr. Donnegan, Joe, and Frank. And went back to classes with Miss. Kinnian. We see Charlie's new wisdom where he makes a mature decision to move away from New York to start a new life where nobody knows him as a genius. Having no regrets despite all the hardship being smart brought to him was something that we would not have seen from Charlie in the middle of the story.
