"My father had made plans, should our family be captured by Communists or pirates, to put us to sleep forever, like Sleeping Beauty, with cyanide pills. For a long time afterwards, I wanted to ask why he hadn’t thought of letting us choose, why he would have taken away our possibility of survival. "

- This line can depict the very struggle of decisions that refugees face every day trying to migrate from one country to another. They face danger in their own country and are forced to flee to "safer" countries but are still in fear of being sent back or punished. Parents or head of families make heartbreaking decisions just to protect their children. Some end up taking their lives to prevent them from being tortured.

Being born in a country that only knows freedom, I have learned to be more grateful for the life I was given. I was given so many opportunities and never once feared my life being in danger. My family never had to make any heartbreaking decisions. I have learned that it is now an opportunity to learn and help others such as the refugees.

- This image shows one of the many different camps that refugees often end up in. Conflicts between neighboring countries leave citizens in distress having them stuck with nowhere to go. Their homes were either seized or destroyed so their only option is to settle in the camps. From the image, you can see that living conditions are not the best. They are given small tents and often have to share with other families.

I have had friends whos families were refugees, and often they would tell me about the conditions they were faced. It is truly heartbreaking knowing that even after all the troubles they have been through, they are still forced to "put up with it." Some tents would be worn out with tears or rips. Nights were cold and they had minimal warmth. The living conditions they face, we need to understand how blessed we are with what we are given.

"Refugee camp" by Al Jazeera English is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0

- From this image, it shows a Palestinian woman crying holding onto a tree. Many Muslim majority countries face hardships. They are tossed from society, not seen as humans, looked down upon and have been the target of many racial backlashes. Often, countries such as America and Israel create conflicts and wage wars or battles in these countries. Through a political standpoint, they only care for oil or other material usage from the countries. They destroy homes, kill families and use authority to justify their unjust actions. Muslim families are forced to convert or go against the followings of their religion. You can see that media portrays the Muslims as bad people but in reality they are the peaceful ones. There has been very minimal coverage to help spread awareness about the situation and even when the topic is brought up, majority of people decide to ignore it.

"Palestine - فلسطيـــن - 'Security' for Israel..." by ЯAFIK ♋ BERLIN is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

It is truly sickening knowing that politicians and citizens of safe countries feel threatened by refugees. They claim that the refugees will raise crime rates or take away jobs. People who live in a war free country or have never experienced hardships will never understand the feelings and past that refugees face. Their only intentions are to give their families a safer future and to let their kids live a happy life. It is arrogance and casual racism that citizens from these war free countries show. They only care about themselves and show little to no sympathy. They criminalize refugees and foreign individuals not knowing anything about them. They cast them aside no allowing them to be apart of society.

"At night, we slept pressed so close together that we were never cold, even without a blanket. During the day, the heat absorbed by the blue plastic made the air in our cabin suffocating. On rainy days and nights, the water came in through holes pierced by the leaves, twigs and stems that we’d added to cool it down."

- Referring back to the image showing the living conditions that refugees face, this line also describes the weather and conditions they face. Refugees are not given an adequate amount of clothing or resources to keep them cool or warm. The nights and rainy days can become very cold and they are not supplied enough blankets or jackets to keep them warm. Often when refugees are fleeing their countries, the journeys are long and devastating. They are forced to leave behind belongings and sometimes loved ones due to the fact that it may weigh them down. Having let go of their materials and belongings, they reach their destinations with little to zero possessions to keep them safe and warm.

There are 6.6 million Syrian refugees hosted by 126 countries worldwide. This stat showing such a high number of refugees just from one country is astonishing. To know that this many people are displaced from their homes and are suffering to survive is painful.

They understand others more than anyone else because of what they have been through. They may be hurting inside but they make sure to express full happiness on the outside.

When I was younger, I met one of my friends cousin which they sponsored to bring over to Canada. Their cousin was a Syrian refugee and when i met him, he was the kindest, most down to Earth person I met. He told me stories of how he and his parents travelled by foot and by asking for rides from locals. His story was very interesting and touching.
Fact - 1 in 97, about 1% of the world's population is displaced

Facts, FAQs, and How to Help.” World Vision, 19 June 2020, www.worldvision.org/refugees-news-stories/what-is-a-refugee-facts#:~:text=Fast%20facts%3A%20Refugees,-79.5%20million%20people&text=1%20in%2097%20people%2C%20about,85%25%20of%20the%20world's%20refugees.

- For some, 1% may seem like a small amount but its talking about 1% of the total world population. That is roughly 79 million people. What we fail to understand is that a lot of those refugees are children. These are children who have either never had, or have loss their education. They have lost family members who they are dependent on, they have lost friends and their homes. I think it is devastating knowing that at such a young age, some children only know war and battle. We take for granted the wonders that are given to us in our war free countries. Our children are given free education, homes and have our family members with us to support us. Everyone's situation is different here as well but comparatively to refugees, we have an easy life.
