Van Gogh tries to mix the inner view and the appearence of the subject in a particular moment, expressing it by brushstrokes and colors. Cezanne paints reality "according to the sphere, the cone and the cylinder". This thought will lead to cubism.
In the portrait "Lady in blue", the body and the arrangement of the hands give a great stability and monumentality to the figure. Seurat wanted to give a scientific basis to the painting, studying colors and visual perception. He represents the characters in working attitude such as the "portrait of Aman-Jean". Toulose Lautrec, in his self-portrait, wants to present himself doing his self-portrait thanks to the presence of the mirror. For Gauguin, self-portraits are a way for looking deeply into the soul.
