The San Francisco 49ers: Miners CHEATING and TAXING!

During the time of the gold rush in California, some miners decided to give offers and betray those. For example, I.B Gilman was going to free a slave after the slave earned $1000. However, once the slave paid for a piece of paper that showed that he was free, the paper mysteriously disappeared and the slave had to work another year. Then after most of the gold went, Americans began to force out foreign and native miners to reduce competition by passing a law in California that imposed a tax of $20 a month on foreign miners. Most miners couldn't pay for that, and so left; but the Chinese opened up shops, restaurants, and laundries, and eventually established a neighborhood called Chinatown in San Francisco.

The significance: The people moving west for economic opportunity displayed the "American Dream" that most would become rich. The laws that discouraged foreign miners showed a strong sense of native supremacy.

Manifest Destiny - The belief and pride in Americans which lead them to believe that America would grow westward and start taking most of the land in that area. The conflicts with miners displayed Manifest Destiny due to Americans taking most of the land for mining in California, and making others move even more westward.

The Foreign Miners tax is the best thing that happened in California!

When the amount of gold started to lower, the profits that every miner got decreased and so a few foreigners had to be kicked out. Now, the tax that foreign miners have to pay makes them want to leave, and that makes MUCH less competition! This allows people like me to be able to have most of the gold mines to ourselves, meaning most of the profit of the gold goes to us.
-An American Gold Miner

The laws created here made the rush unfair!

When I arrived as an immigrant miner during the gold rush, there was a low amount of competition for the gold because there seemed to be a lot. But as time passed, gold decreased, and American miners started to kick us out. We were first forced out only by the mining groups that we were hired by, and then a law passed that makes us foreigners have to pay to continue mining; a payment of $20 a month which is more than most of us foreigners could afford. Most of us left to create businesses in San Francisco, which ranged from shops, restaurants, and laundries, so we created our own little neighborhood Chinatown.
