The shelves were empty (nothing left) so she became upset (sad) and went to sleep hungry.

Shopping list:
a head (one unit) of lettuce
a bunch (few) of bananas
2 bunches of carrots
a quart (1/4 gallon) of milk
a dozen (12) eggs
a loaf (bread baked in one piece)of bread
2 lbs. (weight) of tomatoes
1 container (box) of strawberries
 
We also read the story of Mayor, a teenage immigrant, from the book "The book of unknown Americans". Reading between the lines (understand even if it is not said) we learned that the boys were picking on him (giving him trouble).

Vocabulary and expressions:
Headlights - on the front of a car
Head -  means the front of or first
Taillights - at the back
Eventually - sooner or later - one way or another - it will finally happen
Far-fetched - not likely to happen
Narco - drugs
Picking on - being bad towards someone, saying bad things
Tucked - put his hands under his armpit
Flapped -  his arms (move up and down)
Flung - threw
Cracking up - laughing
Juvenile detention - Jail

Indoors / outdoors

Put on / take off
Turn on / turn off

Examples:
- Joe lives close to the church, around the corner, on Prospect Ave, just two blocks away from here.
- In case of fire, turn on the fire alarm on the wall

Doctor Visit:
David didn't go to work because he was sick. Tomorrow he might (maybe) go, depends on how he feels. He should go to the doctor.

How the doctor will find out what's wrong: 
1) Give you a blood test
2) Take your temperature
3) Measure your blood pressure
4) Look in your ears
5) Look in your mouth (tongue and throat)
