         <title>Evening Class 05/23/22</title>

         <description><![CDATA[We read an excerpt from the novel "The book of unknown Americans". We read the story about Alma. She arrived from Mexico in the U.S with her family. We also discussed some vocabulary from the story.
Additionally, we read grammar stories which helped us practice using verb tenses correctly, prepositions, and noncountable words such as bunch, etc.
 
Vocabulary:
Propped up - stand up
Flipped -turn
Crammed - filled to the top
Taped - attach with tape
Threshold - you go under the threshold when you enter the door
Gravel  lane - the road from small stones
Bills - money
Far apart -the great distance between two things
Next to - close distance
Blood (noun) - body fluid
Bleed (Verb) - lose blood (in the past bled)
Bracelet - chain worn on the wrist
Dim - not clear or bright, dim light (dark)

We discussed Habits:
Good habits vs. Bad habits:
Get up early vs. Get up late
Work hard vs. Postpone (lazy)
Exercise vs. Couch potato
One drink once in a while vs. drinking too much
Attend every class vs. Attend class once in a while or skip class]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>We read a story about a lady that had arrived home late and <strong>rushed out </strong>(go fast) to the grocery with a <strong>shopping list </strong>(items she wanted to buy). The shelves were <strong>empty </strong>(nothing left) so she became <strong>upset</strong> (sad) and went to sleep hungry.<br><br><mark>Shopping list:</mark><br>a <strong>head</strong> (one unit) of lettuce<br>a<strong> bunch</strong> (few) of bananas<br>2 <strong>bunches</strong> of carrots<br>a<strong> quart</strong> (1/4 gallon) of milk<br>a <strong>dozen</strong> (12) eggs<br>a <strong>loaf </strong>(bread baked in one piece)of bread<br>2 <strong>lbs.</strong> (weight) of tomatoes<br>1 <strong>container </strong>(box) of strawberries<br>&nbsp;<br>We also read the story of Mayor, a teenage immigrant, from the book "The book of unknown Americans". <strong>Reading between the lines</strong> (understand even if it is not said) we learned that the boys were <strong>picking on him</strong> (giving him trouble).<br><br><mark>Vocabulary and expressions:</mark><br><strong>Headlights</strong> - on the front of a car<br><strong>Head </strong>-<strong> </strong>&nbsp;means the front of or first<br><strong>Taillights</strong> - at the back<br><strong>Eventually </strong>- <strong>sooner or later -</strong> <strong>one way or another - </strong>it will finally happen<br><strong>Far-fetched</strong> - not likely to happen<br><strong>Narco</strong> - drugs<br><strong>Picking on</strong> - being bad towards someone, saying bad things<br><strong>Tucked</strong> - put his hands under his armpit<br><strong>Flapped</strong> -&nbsp; his arms (move up and down)<br><strong>Flung</strong> - threw<br><strong>Cracking up</strong> - laughing<br><strong>Juvenile detention</strong> - Jail<br><br></div>]]></description>
