On your "initial brainstorming." You are thinking in some great directions. Remember you have to stay inside our time from which is about 1300-1855, so van Gogh won't work.

What you need to do, soon, is focus down.

First of all, decide on a topic. What person, place, event or thing (public or private) would you like to present, commemorate or memorialize? You can think in both concrete and allegorical terms.

Then which artist or movement offers you inspiration and an approach to doing that?

You had interesting ideas there about Durer, for instance, and his drawings of plants and creatures. (You can also look to Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks on this). And you can think about how botany and environment might offer you subject matter. (This is just a comment based on your comments, not a recommendation!)

You could do a series of prints or drawings, individual things or even a sort of chapbook. You could do a larger piece made up of vignettes.

Good luck!

Sarah, I just LOVE the accordion fold idea. Everything that you have talked about makes sense. To keep the motif focused on something in your lifetime, you can think about specific flowers. For instance, there are flower native to where you live or some place you are particularly attached to. (Lot's of websites that have to do with native species.) Here's what kicked out for Maryland when I googled. https://uswildflowers.com/wfquery.php?State=MD

I especially love that this design gives your discrete pages as well as a continuous narrative.

Can't wait!

EC 15 Nov

So for my piece I made sort of a variation between a Flat back book and an Accordian fold. I did a few nature studies (drawings and paintings) and then cut them up, and weaved them together to abstract the imagery. In my 2D work, I am interested in colors and patterns.

I was thinking a little about Albrecht Durer and his nature study sketch books. Thats a lot of why I decided to make my abstracted nature studies into a book.

I think your book was just elegant. As I said in class, it offered a strange sense of simultaneously seeing the wildflowers and yet seeing them destroyed by your process. There's an important metaphor in there.
EC 15 Dec
