I chose the pose of my subjects based on how representative they were of that person. For example, Pearl is facing the sunlight in her portraits, showing her confidence. In Alisha’s portrait she is looking at the viewer at eye-level, showing that she sees them as an equal. With each portrait I tried to imitate the dramatic lighting of Vermeer: one single light source coming in from one side to create shadows across the face.
