Technology Question

When I was observing in a classroom I noticed that it was hard to keeps some students on task. When we are young we do not have a whole lot of impulse control. Depending on the grade it might be hard to keep students on task while they are using technology. Do you think technology can be too much of a distraction or are there ways we can combat this?

Two ways I can think of that might help to combat this problem is to either have something on your own laptop/computer set up to monitor their screens and make sure they aren't off topic, or just moderating how much they are using technology and not keeping them on it for too long. The longer students use it, the most dependent they will become on it. So making sure to take breaks and make sure not every lesson is online will help students not become too much of a distraction

I have thought about this a lot while knowing technology will be used in my classroom. It is without a doubt that some children will abuse the use of technology in the classroom. They could be on FunBrain for example playing an instructed math game to ensure their learning. Next thing you know they are playing Papa's Freezeria. This is why I believe that making connections with your students is so important so you have trust for your students and your students have trust for you.

I agree with what Bradley said; it's so important to take breaks from technology and have variety in the lessons we teach, meaning not everything should be online. When young students have the opportunity to learn through play and hands-on activities, their attitudes and willingness to work on a task change dramatically. Giving young students these chances to burn off excess energy will lead to less distractions and behavior problems when they are expected to complete a task.

I feel like the answer to this question is yes and no. Technology is definitely a distraction, and can be too much of a distraction. But I believe with the right monitoring and time allowance it can be controlled. You have to be able to effectively monitor students first before allowing technology in the classroom.

Technology can actually be very useful with keeping children on track and engaged in lessons and assignments they are supposed to be doing. I believe it is all about making sure the technology being used intrigues the students and gets them excited. I think it is a responsibility of the teacher to do research and be concerned with making sure students are engaged and interested.

There are definitely ways to combat this issue, however it may remain a problem as long as technology is a part of the classroom. Technology can be distracting for students but monitoring as a teacher and gentle reminders to stay on task can go a long way. You can also use online programs that only allow certain websites and apps.

I think it can go both ways. I do not think it is healthy for students to be on technology all day. I think by that they would either get distracted or they would get to where you cannot pull them away from looking at a screen. To use technology in a healthy way would be to play a dancing video with music on your smartboard so the students can have a brain break. This is something my teacher that I observed did and I thought it was a really great idea and also gave her a break from keeping them entertained.

I think technology can definitely be a huge distraction if there are no rules and guidelines for usage in place. When students feel like they have the freedom to use technology at any capacity they want, this is when it is a major distraction. There are definitely ways to combat this issue. I think teachers can put in rules and make sure that students are not on their computers during the lesson.
