It was a social movement that took effect in both England and the United States of America. Jane got the idea for a settlement house from reading a magazine. In 1989 Jane decided with a friend Ellen Gate Starr, to open a House and she named it Hull house. The goal was to help immigrants who were in need. Hull house started off at first as a kindergarten but soon grew into an infant center and a daytime nursery. Jane was able to continue to expand on to hill house through donation funds she collected and was then able to build a gymnasium, play grounds, housing for children, cooperative clubs, and shops.
