When the French colonists first arrived there were 2 Native American groups already there. The first group was called the "Illniek". The second group was called, "The Miami Tribe".

 the first Europeans to visit Illinois were the French explorers louis Jolet and jacques marquette in 1673 but the place as ceded to Britain.  after the French and Indian war. After the American Revolution, Illinois became a territory of the united states, and achived statehood  in 1818. Illinois became a state in 1818 it was finally granted statehood.
