If the election depended solely on the popular vote, then thecandidates could limit campaigning to most populated areas or specific places. To win the election, presidential candidates need electoral votes from multiple areas and therefore they build campaign platforms with a national idea, meaning that the winner will actually be for all of the needs of the entire country.
