Today it was a very interesting day. I heard a lot about slavery wich made me sad. I started to think how happy I am to live the way I do. Nobody deserve to be treated that way. It was a very hard time to live in for people who were slaves. It should never happened.

I learned to accept things as they are, to accept the current circumstances and to be part of the community. The stories about the history of slavery were extremely interesting and made me want to do more research. The point I was thinking about brought me back to my work in kindergarten, what an important task I have to teach children to accept other people's differences.

It‘s not an old concept (as far as I remember it was „invented“ in 1922?).

It‘s not something that is simply given to us.

It‘s not a static notion of who we are.

Well, what is it then?

After today I think it‘s something that we desperately need as humans, something that we can influence and something that nobody can take away from us even though some people like Mr Lynch tried to in his times.

It is like a good cookie-recipe which gives you plenty of possibilities to alter it and make every new type of cookie special in its own way, and the basis of the dough is language!

The stories about slavery and the methods the colonisers used were heartbreaking and horrifying. It was also interesting to walk through the colourful exotic city, visit a market full of spices and local specialities and try regional dishes.

Getting to know new cultures is a very interesting activity. However, this should be accompanied by a reflection on the people who create this culture and give it meaning. Reflection on what happened along the way in the past, what events influenced the shape of what fascinates us today.

Every day in our life is an adventure. Every lesson at school in teacher’s life is an adventure as well. Unpredictable and not planned situations at school may irritate you, make you angry or you just calm down and solve the situation in different way and creatively. This is one of the most important teacher’s competencies in everyday life.

It is surprising that most of the things we use every day are similar and universal in their origin and use. Only their content or some details acquire national and different features. At the beginning of the Lent period, Lithuania celebrates Shrove Tuesday, in Guadeloupe it is the last day of carnival period. On that day Vaval is burned in Guadeloupe, and Morė is burned in Lithuania. Different nations, different places of the world but the custom of cleansing and renewing with fire is the same.
