Both stories highlight the shallowness and ignorance of the privileged high class. With them treating Tuta like an animal in a zoo and repeatedly mispronouncing his name. Also seen with fat man telling Leila "you can't hope to last anything like as long as that." When she tells him that she thinks it's "marvellous" that he's still going to balls. Implying that woman are only useful while they're young and pretty. Just as Tuta is not truely valued by the people who invited him; being treated as more of a token than anything.

Both characters' mood and actions changed upon knowing some information that happens or is happening at a ball. For instance, in Her FIrst Ball, the fat man explained to Leila what would have transpired if the party was set long ago. After listening, she suddenly felt sad and was no longer enjoying the party. Similarly, in His First Ball, Tuta became aware of everyone critisizing his every move; he then felt more embarassed and tried to isolate himself from the crowd.

In the beginning of the story, Leila portrays her experience at the ball as a fantasy which is exaggerated throughout the whole text as she describes her surroundings as some sort of magical place. However, towards the end the Fat Man breaks Leila's naivety by telling her that this fantasy cannot last forever. Leila was disheartened upon this realization and overthinks the situation that ruins her mood. But as the story ends and a "ravishing tune began", Leila became aware that although this moment would not last forever; she could still enjoy it to the fullest.

Though, moments after that, they finally accepted the mishaps and enjoyed the rest of the party. Leila had done that by dancing out of obligation, which later turned to dancing out of enjoyment. On the other hand, Tuta was conversed by a woman whom the people mocked before him; he was able to relate to her that he was having a good time shortly after the embarassment.

Tuta was reluctant and didn’t want to go to the ball to begin with and Leila was excited and looking forward to the ball. This is backed by the fact that the author writes about a character that is he same gender as themselves so the authors could be using past experience for inspiration.
