I am from “Bucayo” from coconut and sugarcane in the small barrio of San Isidro Ilaya in the Philippine Islands.

I am from the “Bahay Kubo” a house made of bamboos, cogon grass and from trees cut from our small piece of land.

It felt heavenly and perfect like a Garden of Eden growing up in my birthplace until I saw what was out beyond our land.

I am from the sea salt I sold in the flea market so I could help my parents put food on our table to feed my five siblings.

I am from the small farmland my dad inherited from my Lolo Colas whose belief was that “women don’t go to college” and “you don’t spend money for a party to feed people so that when they leave, they’d just gossip and complain about the food despite serving your best “adobo” or “caldereta.” 

 

From my Lola Oliva who never learned how to read and write until she passed away. If she only knew she had so many grandchildren who became teachers.

 

 The athlete's genes that I inherited but failed to develop at my early age because I had chores and responsibilities at home I shared and if I didn’t do would cost me my education.

 

I am from the Ricamara Family who was full of hopes that education could our passport from poverty and the unknown to the gateway of endless possibilities this world has to offer.
