The war in Darfur started in 2003 when rebels started a violent uprising to protest the Sudanese government's disregard western Sudan and the non-Arab population. In response, the government sponsored Arab militias (known as Janjaweed). The militias terrorized the civilians in the area and stopped international aid organizations from delivering food and medical supplies for people in need. This lead to hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths and casualties
