The Brunei sculpture caught my attention because of its shapes and bronze color. I liked how it looked elegant.

Each sculpture shows something special about its country like its culture, history or values.

I think the artists wanted visitors to feel connected and to learn more about each country’s identity and pride.

Art can show a country’s traditions ,beliefs and stories in a creative way. It helps people understand and respect different cultures.

what really excited me about this mosque was how the mosque was airconditioned for 24 hours which is extremely rare in Singapore. something that may be confusing about the mosque is about the route to the toilet is very far because the mosque is big n it confuses me sometimes. an additional info for me to better understand is to why they always choose the colours gold and white. after visiting , i had a deeper understanding why people has said that brunei is a very peaceful country as people can even sleep in the mosque .

i noticed how the sculpture is very tall and also gold . the singapore sculpture caught my eye as the gold of the sculpture elaborates elegant through colours. i think that the sculpture represents the reputation or the intention as the country. i think that the artists wanted the viewers to wonder more by putting puzzling designs on the sculpture to gain more knowledge. i think art can represent culture as art tells stories about our world through vibrant colours, various interesting symbols to diffferentiate countries differences. i wonder if the people from the generation now would have a better understanding of an art that was made a long time ago? i wonder if i am able to express with more colours to the art with it being relevant to the country.

sultan’s palace (istana nurul iman)

i believe that a bruneian citizen’s perspective would be more respectful towards the sultan because i believe that they are more knowledged on the history of the sultan where else a foreign tourist might not have a better understanding and would feel completely confuse compared to bruneian citizens. i notice how they truly respect the sultan by giving the sultan its own gate to enter and exit and other gates for family members and other gates for workers or ambassadors . this might differ perspectives because its not often experienced or practiced in other countries . it is not as common and really interesting to see in person in my opinion

I see many shapes and patterns, some modern and some traditional.

Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

The shiny golden domes attracts me because they look beautiful and show Brunei’s rich culture.

The detailed designs might be hard to understand.

I want to know who built it and what the designs mean.

I hope to learn how Islam shapes Brunei’s culture and way of life.

1. A Bruneian citizen might see the Istana Nurul Iman palace as a proud symbol of their country. It shows the Sultan’s leadership, Islamic values, and national unity.

1. I think the perspective of a Bruneian citizen towards the palace would be respectful and appreciative toward it . I think the perspective of a foreign tourist would be curious and will not appreciate that much until they learn about it.

2. They will both be appreciative towards it after learning about it history, culture.and religious.

3. The Bruneian citizen would feel a sense of belonging while foreign tourist would not since they are not the country citizen. Their role is that when a foreign tourist come to Brunei the Bruneian citizen will make them feel welcome to the country.

Overall, the experience at the Tamu Kianggeh Day Market was chill and relax. The people there are also friendly allowing us to try some of their goods when asked.

At the Brunei Energy Hub, I learned that oil and gas have been the main source of Brunei’s wealth for many years, but now they are also exploring cleaner and more sustainable energy for the future.

This visit made me realise how much we rely on energy and why sustainability matters. When I return to Singapore, I will be more mindful about saving energy and think more about how my future can contribute to a greener world.

Brunei oil was discovered by 2 British and recently there discovered another place where there oil too. Brunei earn a lot after discovering it and other countries buying from Brunei.

It is important for Brunei as they rely mostly on selling oil and gas to have a better life and survive as a country. For the world, oil is needed for a lot of things to be done, for instance car need oil to move. Without it things would not work.

That energy and sustainability is really important and we should appreciate and cherish it instead of taking it for granted. We rely largely on those so it really important so that our future would continue to be better.

I saw the Sultan’s golden chariot, royal crowns, ceremonial outfits, and many gifts from other countries. The displays were very grand and detailed, showing a lot of wealth and tradition.

Tamu Kianggeh Day Market

Both the Tamu Kianggeh Market and our wet market sell fresh food like fruits, vegetables, and fish. They are lively places where people buy daily needs and talk with sellers.

Tamu Kianggeh is different because it also sells handmade and traditional Bruneian items, while our wet market mostly sells food. It shows more of Brunei’s culture.

Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum

I saw how Brunei was part of old sea trade, which connects to what I know about ships and trading between countries.

I learned that Brunei was an important trading place and had links with places like China through sea routes.

I wonder how the ships sank and what happened to the sailors. I also wonder why Brunei’s sea trade slowed down.

I see houses built on stilts above the water, connected by wooden walkways and boats moving around.

I think this water village continues to exist because it is part of Brunei’s culture and history, and people still enjoy living this traditional way.

I wonder if Singapore could have a water village too, but maybe it’s hard because there isn’t much space and the city is very modern.

Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge

I see a long, strong bridge connecting two parts of Brunei across the sea.

I think it was built to help people travel easily and to show Brunei’s growth and unity.

I wonder what stories the bridge would tell about the people who use it every day.

i have learnt that japan, south korea and india are brunei’s main customers.

this is important because they are what keeps brunei in business allowing them to be where they are now. this made me realise how much countries depend on each other for energy. when I go back to Singapore, it reminds me how important it is to use cleaner and sustainable energy so we don’t rely too much on others in the future.

Those items that different country gave to Brunei caught my attention as it all very unique and beautiful and the gift they give have it own meaning and represent the country.

All the different role are very important as it have it own responsibility. The display items tell me that the Sultan’s role is very important and the choice it make can differ Brunei future. Everyone respect and protect the Sultan and want to shake his hand eagerly as it really honour to be able to do so.

Why is it not government like election but royal where it pass down to family members?

These items show that the Sultan is highly respected and plays an important role in Brunei’s monarchy and national identity.

E：Because many countries rely on oil for sustainable livelihoods, and much of this oil comes from Brunei, the lack of oil would cause difficulties in other countries' power generation and livelihoods.

See: We visited the museum, and what captivated me most was this painting. The figures are rendered with such vividness and detail.

Tamu Kianggeh has more traditional handmade products, while our wet market in Singapore mostly sells food. This shows their market also reflects their culture and traditions.

the shield display in the museum caught my eye during the visit. the shield display item shows the royalties throughout brunei’s timeline. the display tells me about the background and stories of what happened back in the days. the royalties having conflicts with one another leading to two murder against two families. i wonder if they have ever gotten consequences for their actions

two similarities are that they both sell similar ingredients such as fish, local snacks and jewelry. they are also quite packed during weekends. one difference this the days they are busy on, for brunei, the market is usually packed on friday and sundays as those are they’re usual weekend holidays while, for singapore, wet markets are usually packed on saturdays and sundays as those are they’re holidays.

Think: I think some people are trying to downplay their wealth and live a more secure life, where they aren't targeted.

No, because I think Singapore is a landlocked country, and it's a place where many countries come to trade and negotiate business. I don't think people would choose to live on the sea. The wealthy would choose to live in more protected areas, where they wouldn't be targeted. Singapore's security measures are very safe.

A windy and hot experience : Spotting wildlife at the Mangrove River Safari!

i learnt that many of the ships parked near brunei river and marina island was manmade as a immigration point. and also brunei was one of the most important trading centres in southeast asia and was well known for its rich sources of exotic jungle and sea products, brunei is rich for its high quality culture, material, particularly handicraft.

i know that brunei is one of the countries that is included in the trading back in the day, i have learnt that arabic, chinese, filipino and malaysian people have travelled to brunei to trade at the ports.

the ideas ive gained for brunei’s role in regional trading is that brunei was one of the most important trading centres in southeast asia and well known for its rich exotic jungle and sea products like camphor spices agar woof lakewood resins sago birds nest, wax, honey, tortoise, and turtle shells as well as its pearls. i wonder how they dug the ship out from underwater the deep sea.

monkeys, monitor lizards, eagles and many others spotted at mangrove swamps. this scene has showed me how i would not be able to experience this in singapore and how this event should be treasured and shared.

I now understand that Brunei played an important role in regional trade and was well connected to other countries.

I wonder how the ships sank and how people found and saved the artifacts after so many years.

The Malay Technology Museum was a rich and informative experience. I learned about a ship that, according to history, could cause a bomb to bounce back if it was shot at it. I also discovered that people who wanted to pass through the Brunei River had to declare whether they came in peace or with the intention to attack. If they claimed peace, they could pass safely; if not, it could lead to a war.

I also learned that people in the past knew how to build different types of houses using various materials. The difference between then and now is that traditional tools were used in the past, while today we use technology. These houses were handmade and needed regular maintenance; otherwise, they could develop holes, and people might be able to peek inside.

The most interesting part for me was learning that boat builders were very wealthy, as a single boat could be sold for $12,000. Which make me wonder if there still people in Brunei who still uses traditional methods in their daily life today?

At the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum I saw many models of traditional Bruneian ship and it trade route. This connect to what I know about the history where Brunei was part of the regional trade network exchange where goods like spices are trade. The ship is also crucial for importing or shipping goods from one country to another to trade.

I learnt that Brunei’s role in regional trade is a significant role as their ship do not travel just in the local but also outside of it.

I am curious on how the shipwreck is being preserved so well for so long.

It was built to connect places and make travel easier. It also shows Brunei’s progress and unity.

i see almost all the houses built by wood and kept together by nails. i think these water villager continues to exist because the residents refuse to move as they do not want others to know about their wealth. yes now that i think about it, i have wondered if singapore can have such a water village.

The bridge’s long length, modern design and tall central tower stood out to me. It looked very grand and stretched beautifully over the water.

I gained a new perspective that Brunei was more influential in regional trade than I expected. It played a key role in connecting Southeast Asia with China, Arabia and Europe through maritime routes.

I wonder how these shipwrecks were discovered and what other secrets are still hidden underwater. I am also curious about how Brunei protected its trade routes and what caused some ships to sink.

I saw box girder and cable-stayed design. The bridge is very long and huge curve. These details stand out as it hard to see this type of design in Singapore and other countries would not have it.

I think such a long prominent bridge was build as allow people to travel to places faster.

I think if the bridge could “speak” it would tell visitors it history and the important of it.

the insanely long length of the bridge stood out to me, i think the bridge was built to provide a straightforward link way in between both the lands in the country. if it could speak, it would tell visitors that it is the longest bridge in the whole of southeast asia

^{back in the days, there was a tradition of chopping people’s head off as gift to the newlyweds when just gotten married, bonds would be created when played with traditional games like hop scotch, houses would also be built on stilts on land in order to allow water to flow through below the houses.}

the difference is really huge as the school is really different , the classroom capacity are smaller compared to singapore’s as well as brunei has lesser students hence explains the smaller classrooms. but its also similar as the food they provide for us can be also found or can be common in singapore as well. this showed me that even though we have our differences in terms of culture , there are also things that can be found in singapore commonly .

one thing that i will prepare for myself in the future is to always be welcoming for upcoming challenges and changes , to always have an open mindset .

I learnt that Brunei schools takes smaller parts of a subject and focuses on it for awhile. They also have a lesson where you just read which I find quite interesting.

Brunei schools are quite big but their classes have lesser students.

I will be more welcoming towards challenges in life.

Batik painting

Making batik reminds me that art can show culture and tradition through colors and patterns.

I learned that batik needs patience and care. It helped me see that creativity can take time and effort.

It changed my view of art , I realized that making something beautiful can also be slow and detailed work.

Jalan Roberts Historic Walk

Jalan Roberts and Little India both show rich culture and history. They have old buildings and shops that reflect the local community.

The difference is that Jalan Roberts is quiet and focuses on local history, while Little India is lively with colorful shops, food, and festivals.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque/The Frame Brunei Darussalam/The Royal Barge

I see the mosque and royal barge reflected beautifully in the calm water.

The frame is big and unique.

I think the gold dome and symmetry show faith, power, and national pride.

I think that they wanted to show their luxuries and national identity and placed it in front of the mosque to let people take pictures with them in it.

I wonder how the mosque’s design tells the story of Brunei’s culture and beliefs.

Gadong night market

I used to think the night market was just a place to buy food.

Now I think it’s a lively place that shows Brunei’s culture, community, and local creativity.

Bruneian emphasis strong on both tradition and education. Their way of life is very closely tight to their culture and religious. In school education help build character and provide tons of opportunities for students to focus on the aspect they want.

Both Singapore and Brunei life is the same in term of the purpose of places and how we learn in class. However, the difference is that their class size is smaller thus there are a lot more class than Singapore. They have reading room for level like express, normal…

One thing I will do to prepare myself for the future is by reflecting on what I have learnt and apply it in my life.

the classes in the schools a smaller than the ones back in sg allowing teachers and students to focus more on class and enables the teachers to pay more attention to students who struggle more in specific classes. i see that the brunei school has lessons and subjects specified in jobs to help out the students future like hospitality unlike singapore where they only teach lessons and subjects for course for our future schools. i will be more prepared.

Connection: I think the similarity is that students and teachers play games to learn while we study. The difference is that most students sit on the floor, and their classrooms are not very large.

Reflection: There is nothing.

I also saw that their classrooms are smaller compared to those in Singapore. This makes the learning environment feel more personal, while in Singapore,classes are usually bigger and more fast-paced.

To prepare for the future, I will try to manage stress better and focus on learning at my own pace.

Painting the batik was really fun and relaxing as we got to paint freely without following strict rules. Creating batik connects to what I already know about art — the need for creativity, patience, and the use of colours to express ideas. It also reminds me that art can reflect heritage and identity through meaningful designs, similar to other traditional art forms.

Through this experience, I learned that creativity is not only about painting freely, but also about carefully planning and thinking about what I want to express. I gained a deeper appreciation for the effort and time needed to complete a piece of batik art. Even though it was time-consuming, the process taught me to be patient and to value the beauty of traditional crafts.

This experience challenged my previous assumptions about art being just drawing or painting on paper. I now understand that batik involves unique techniques, deep cultural meaning, and special skills. It made me realise that art can be more than what it appears — it can tell stories and represent identity through colours and patterns

Both Jalan Roberts Historic Walk and Little India shows rich culture heritage. Both also have street art, colourful street and history. However the Jalan Robert Historic Walk focus more on history while the Little India emphasis on more on culture.

Batik taught me that creativity is not always fast or easy. It takes patience to apply the wax and dye step-by-step. I realised that cultural art forms express stories and emotions in unique ways, not just through the final design but also through the process.

I used to think batik was simple, but I learned it is detailed and skillful. The process is more complicated than it looks. It made me appreciate traditional crafts more, because they require effort, technique, and respect for culture.

I learned that batik needs a lot of patience and skill, not just creativity.

It changed my view of art, I saw how much time and care cultural crafts really take.

Jalan Roberts is quieter and less crowded, while Little India in Singapore is usually busy and packed with people.

but now i think that we share common things

I noticed Gold domes, symmetrical pattern. The water reflect the building thus making it look really beautiful.

The Gold domes show wealth and faith of the country (Brunei). The symmetry pattern shows the balance and harmony. While the Large bridge shows connection among people and country.

How does water make these places look special and unique compare to other places?

I think that the vibe the sch give was a very good type they made us rlly know what and how their sch operate classes and special event

One thing that caught my attention was how energetic they was bc i was playing a special tradition game the one where you have to jump over the rope and after every jump they were cheering even if i didn't make the jump they still cheered me on to try oncen again which shows that they were very supportive

I used to think that night market would be like stalls that are set up outside road or street. Now I think that Night Market can also be inside a build market place.

I wonder if people can make their own batik in the shop like we did

I think that it was a very good experience as not alw and easy that we get to do batik even in sg or brunei so this was a good experience for me

I think that it was a rare chance for us to get to walk on the historical walk

I wonder if the road has been through wars or not

the inside and outside of the mosque looked really beautiful to me and my favourite was the inside of the mosque because of how the interior looked and it made me feel something because of its beauty

I think thay the thought of the by the brunei government was smart

I wonder if we can vist everyday

The use of gold, symmetry, and large bridges shows power, faith, and national pride. It reflects how Brunei values its religion, culture, and royal traditions.

How does the water change the way we see these structures?

Connection: I think the similarity is that students and teachers play games to learn while we study. The difference is that most students sit on the floor, and their classrooms are not very large.

Reflection: There is nothing.

they are both very colourful and bright, by the looks of both of the buildings. little india more detail with the art of the buildings compared to the historical walk. this allows the buildings of little india pop out more rather than the buildings of the historical walk buildings.

i used to think that the night market was like a wet market and only sold meat and vegetables and fruits. now i know that the night market is similar to pasar malams in singapore with multiple cats surrounding the market.

Through this experience, I've learned that creativity isn't just about freely painting; it requires careful planning and reflection on what I want to express. Although time-consuming and laborious, the process has taught me patience and made me appreciate the beauty of traditional craftsmanship.

I now understand that batik possesses unique techniques, profound cultural connotations, and special skills. It has made me realize that art is more than just what it seems—it can tell stories and express identity through color and pattern.

Now I think they are lively community spaces where people can gather and enjoy local foods and spent time with each other.

the process of the art was very calming and relaxing especially with the music in the background, we were allowed to paint the batik however we’d like allowing us to have creativity. the finishing product of the batik was very satisfying seeing our own ones completed. what made the experience more enjoyable was the incredible view, being able to paint our batik however we’d like with a gorgeous view in front of us allowed me to be so relaxed and calm.

The most difficult/challenging part for me was adjusting to a new environment at the start of the trip.

Moving forward, I will treasure these new experiences and be more confident when exploring new places.

The most challenging part was communicating with the STEPRI students during the school visit, as I sometimes could not hear them clearly because they spoke very softly. I was also worried about accidentally saying something wrong when asking questions related to their culture. However, in the end, I managed to have a fun and meaningful time with them and was able to build new friendships.

Moving forward, I will continue to be more open-minded and curious about other cultures. I will also apply the values ( appreciation, respect, patience, responsibility, and independence) I have learned from this trip. Lastly, I will treasure every friendship made, even though we may not know each other for long, and cherish all the experiences gained from this trip

One challenge I faced was not being able to find a clean toilet anywhere but the aircon was nice in the mosque.

Moving forward I will want to travel the world more and explore hidden gems through out the world

One difficulty i face is that at brunei they are speaking malay but different type of malay and i couldn't understand however the tour guide teaches me some brunei words like inside of lari(run) is lai bc some of the people at brunei speak wihtout any 'r' in any words

Another difficultly i face is definitely trying to be on time for wake up call and meeting below at lobby so moving forward i will try my best to wake up at least 20 mins b4 the time needed

Moving forward i would recommend the next batch of sec 3 to just go to any trip bc is rlly fun and from the trip you will learn lots of values for example respect when someone is speaking responsibility to your own stuff and taking the initiative to do reflection right after the visit

Overall i think this was a very funn tripp i would rate it 100/10 our sch plan different activities which were very funn would definitely recommend brunei again bc there is not alot of stuff to buy there so students will spent more time together

2)The Kampong Ayer (Water Village) was a thriving community with its own forms of transportation, like wooden boats, and traditional fishing tools such as fish traps and nets.

3)Bruneians had unique metalworking and boat-building skills, which they passed down through generations, often within families or small communities.

2 aspects of the daily lives of Bruneian in the past... 1) People lived in houses on stilts over water, which is very different from the land-based homes we commonly see today. This way of living was adapted to the local river environment.

2) Most tools and crafts were made by hand, such as weaving baskets or making fishing gear, compared to today's reliance on machines and factory-made items.

One question I would like to ask... was there any conflicts that happened in such a united, Kampong spirited area like Kampong Ayer?

I chose this photo as the trip to the STPRI, I enjoyed ever moment of it! The students were really sweet and warm, my buddy was really fun and very skilled in explaining her country towards me! I am so happy I went home with her number 😊

Moving forward, I hope to have more opportunities like this in the future to explore and strengthen my friendships.
