S: Brunei's culture has a very kampong spirit vibe to it, the royalty would often interact with the public, like praying with them, going out to talk to them... And during the weekends cars would not be allowed to go to a certain area so that the Brunei people are able to have fun with their family and friends during their day off, bringing the Brunei people even closer together!

jame’ asr hassanal bolkiah mosque

what really excited me about this mosque was how the mosque was airconditioned for 24 hours which is extremely rare in Singapore. something that may be confusing about the mosque is about the route to the toilet is very far because the mosque is big n it confuses me sometimes. an additional info for me to better understand is to why they always choose the colours gold and white. after visiting , i had a deeper understanding why people has said that brunei is a very peaceful country as people can even sleep in the mosque .

damuan park ASEAN sculpture garden

i noticed how the sculpture is very tall and also gold . the singapore sculpture caught my eye as the gold of the sculpture elaborates elegant through colours. i think that the sculpture represents the reputation or the intention as the country. i think that the artists wanted the viewers to wonder more by putting puzzling designs on the sculpture to gain more knowledge. i think art can represent culture as art tells stories about our world through vibrant colours, various interesting symbols to diffferentiate countries differences. i wonder if the people from the generation now would have a better understanding of an art that was made a long time ago? i wonder if i am able to express with more colours to the art with it being relevant to the country.

sultan’s palace (istana nurul iman)

i believe that a bruneian citizen’s perspective would be more respectful towards the sultan because i believe that they are more knowledged on the history of the sultan where else a foreign tourist might not have a better understanding and would feel completely confuse compared to bruneian citizens. i notice how they truly respect the sultan by giving the sultan its own gate to enter and exit and other gates for family members and other gates for workers or ambassadors . this might differ perspectives because its not often experienced or practiced in other countries . it is not as common and really interesting to see in person in my opinion

These views differ because Bruneians see the palace as part of their identity and culture, while tourists see it more as something to look at and learn about. The Sculpture that caught my eye was the Singapore Sculpture, where it symbolizes unity, showing how united Singapore is as a country, where everyone is able to live in harmony. THINK:I think each sculpture represents the values of the countries about what that makes the country important and unique. I think the artists is trying to make the visitors understand the different background of each ASEAN countries, making them better understand each countries. I think art can represent the countries in a very artsy way, making it more creative and more interesting in the eyes of visitors. WONDER: I wonder how the artists came up such intriguing designs to represent the countries in such weird looking features

One of the memorable ones was their national dish ambuyat, a starchy food made from the interior trunk of the sago palm. It has a glue-like consistency and is often served with side dishes like stewed beef, vegetables, or fermented fruit dips. And how people are able to gather there and hang out with each other, and usually on fridays it is the mosy busiest. Children would always wait outside for their parents while their parents shop in the day market for their daily needs. I wonder how the people in the old day discovered they could make these.

Water village help everyone as its one, kampung spirit, bc they know everybody. Sit down and chat, random hang outs. Back then its hard to hide a secret. 200 years ago human discovered oil, was so useful and valuable that it was treated like gold. Bruneians found oil, but no oil was rlly found. As the years go by, two British man cycling along the beach passerbys smelt oil. They reported it and they finally sound oil underground and with that a new chapter in brunei was formed. Shell was established by the government to focus on the growth of the oil production, and in 1969 they found another type of oil, fairley oil and gas field. And in 1972 brunei opened their own oil terminal that operates 24 hours 7 days a week. And in 1991 brunei built the billionth barrel monument to commemorate their 62th years after the discovery of the field. And when brunei reached 200 years, they sent 200 million tonnes of oil to japan. And now everywhere in brunei almosts has solar panels and is able to generate 600 household per year

Brunei energy hub

Brunei oil was discovered by 2 British and recently there discovered another place where there oil too. Brunei earn a lot after discovering it and other countries buying from Brunei.

It is important for Brunei as they rely mostly on selling oil and gas to have a better life and survive as a country. For the world, oil is needed for a lot of things to be done, for instance car need oil to move. Without it things would not work.

That energy and sustainability is really important and we should appreciate and cherish it instead of taking it for granted. We rely largely on those so it really important so that our future would continue to be better.

I see the histories of the past Sultans of Brunei and the important events that has taken place, the objects that caught my eye was definitely the golden chariots and surrounding it, are the spears and shield that the Brunei army used. The golden chariots is used by many important royalty like queen Elizabeth II when she visited Brunei. The reason why I found it interesting as the designs are really extravagant and it shows how fierce Brunei is with all the spears and armors surrounding the golden chariot. I think the sultan role is very important as the sultan have to weigh a lot of responsibility, when the sultan is being announced, they would wear a 3 kg crown, it shows that the heaviness of the crown is the big responsibilities the sultans have to hold, it challenges them if they are able to take on the responsibility. I wonder how the daily the lives of sultans are

The 2 similarities between the Tamy Kianggeh Day market and the wet market back in Singapore is definitely the cheap prices! I think that the cheap prices for a huge quantity is very convenient for those who are struggling financially. Another similarity is the kampong spirit the stall owners and the customers have with each other, the stalls owners are very friendly and interact comfortably with each other instead of constantly competing for customers. There would be chairs and tables for the customers or stall owners to sit down once in awhile and sit as well which is the same back in Singapore, the wet market near my house would have chairs set up in open areas where the stall owners would sit down and talk with one another! One difference is definitely the timing where the stalls would open, in Singapore, all the wet market would open at the same timing while the fish stalls in Brunei only opens at Friday where the wet market would be at its peak of times.

I don't think people would choose to live on the sea. The wealthy would choose to live in more protected areas, where they wouldn't be targeted. Singapore's security measures are very safe.

It was really scary to depart from the boat and climb the stairs as there were no hand reeling at all and i could only rely on my balance. I think this water village continue to exists because of the way the people living there communicates, the way our tour guide explained about his childhood in his house it sounded very different from what we experience in singapore as when the tides rises, they jump into the water with their friends. Although i was really scared, i wished singapore could have this type of unity within ourselves. I wonder how they even managed to complete everything

We also managed to see some animals like the bird, monkey and monitor lizard. Although singapore also has these animals, it just feels different here. The anticipation of looking for an animal was very different as usually singapore only has zoo. Their animals here looks very active and cool. I also loved the boat ride the most, its very exciting as it goes really fast. The sounds of the splashing waves and the gushing wind. I dont think i would find another experience like that in singapore. Their land here is really huge and their mountains are so green and tall. This was my favourite stop of the day.

Arabic, chinese, malaysia and Philippines traders came into brunei. Many artefacts left over from the sunken ship, they thought this was oil but on a closer look, it was a sunken ship. Brunei prospered after king of malacca fell, there were also many proof and evidence of tax that there were many trading transactions. Apart from the ceramics assemblage, there were beads, glass bracelets, game token found too. Many of the ships are parked near the brunei river, tarinda island, an immigration point. Begins under the 5th sultan, trading was possible with him. He not only covered the entire borneo island, he even included suluk islands, palawan to saludang now know as the Philippines. Brunei was one of the important trading centres in southeast asia and well know for its rich sources of exotic jungle and sea products, they were also of high quality culture material particularly handicrafts.

I also saw the various different houses they use to live in and their background story behind it and how they would defend themselves when someone approaches with bad intentions. I think they are very admirable as they use limited resources but they can make such good quality and sturdy houses on the water. I learned about a ship that, according to history, could cause a bomb to bounce back if it was shot at it. I also discovered that people who wanted to pass through the Brunei River had to declare whether they came in peace or with the intention to attack. If they claimed peace, they could pass safely; if not, it could lead to a war.

I also learned that people in the past knew how to build different types of houses using various materials. The difference between then and now is that traditional tools were used in the past, while today we use technology. These houses were handmade and needed regular maintenance; otherwise, they could develop holes, and people might be able to peek inside.

The most interesting part for me was learning that boat builders were very wealthy, as a single boat could be sold for $12,000. Which make me wonder if there still people in Brunei who still uses traditional methods in their daily life today?

This connect to what I know about the history where Brunei was part of the regional trade network exchange where goods like spices are trade. The ship is also crucial for importing or shipping goods from one country to another to trade.

I learnt that Brunei’s role in regional trade is a significant role as their ship do not travel just in the local but also outside of it.

I am curious on how the shipwreck is being preserved so well for so long.

In school education help build character and provide tons of opportunities for students to focus on the aspect they want.

Both Singapore and Brunei life is the same in term of the purpose of places and how we learn in class. However, the difference is that their class size is smaller thus there are a lot more class than Singapore. I think they really put in a lot of effort to make sure that we had the best experience in their school, they were nothing but amazing people who made sure we had as much fun as them. I wonder if they had as much fun as us bringing us around.

Arts & Handicraft Centre – Batik Painting Workshop

Painting the batik was really fun and relaxing as we got to paint freely without following strict rules. Creating batik connects to what I already know about art — the need for creativity, patience, and the use of colours to express ideas. It also reminds me that art can reflect heritage and identity through meaningful designs, similar to other traditional art forms.

Through this experience, I learned that creativity is not only about painting freely, but also about carefully planning and thinking about what I want to express. I gained a deeper appreciation for the effort and time needed to complete a piece of batik art. Even though it was time-consuming, the process taught me to be patient and to value the beauty of traditional crafts.

This experience challenged my previous assumptions about art being just drawing or painting on paper. I now understand that batik involves unique techniques, deep cultural meaning, and special skills. It made me realise that art can be more than what it appears — it can tell stories and represent identity through colours and patterns

I love how STPRI have periods where the students have a time for readings, there are multiple rooms for the students to read and watch movies. The classes quantity are also very small compared to Singapore which is very shocking. The similarity are definitely the subjects combinations but there are still differences like unlike Singapore where you can choose your subjects, they get their subjects by their grades. One thing I will prepare myself for the future is make myself know more about my culture, surroundings so I can explain better in the future when someone asks me about my culture as I saw how well knowledged the STPRI students were about their culture which inspired me alot

I used to think the gadong night market was very crowded and boring but now I think that the gadong night market has not a lot of people and was very peaceful, there were lots of cats there which was really enjoyable to be there, apart from the delicious and cheap foods!

A challenge i gad to adapt to was getting the phone adjusted and ready for their data, my phone had a lot of issues trying to connect but thanks to the flexible and reliable teachers. It was fixed easily after they brought me to a shop for advice. Moving forward i will definitely use these experiences as my motivation if i ever encounter any challenges as i feel that although i had so much fun during this trip, really being attentive to the tour guide when he is sharing is also really important as well. He told us things that in Singapore would almost be impossible like each household would have 3-4 cars and how their oil is extremely cheap.

I am thankful for the opportunity to travel overseas with everyone and for all the new experiences and unforgettable memories that Brunei offered at every place we visited. I am also grateful for the friendships formed during the school visit and for learning so much more about Brunei’s culture, religion, and education system. I would especially like to thank everyone who took us around, explained the history of each place, and guided us throughout the trip — their efforts made the experience meaningful and enjoyable for all of us.

The most challenging part was communicating with the STEPRI students during the school visit, as I sometimes could not hear them clearly because they spoke very softly. I was also worried about accidentally saying something wrong when asking questions related to their culture. However, in the end, I managed to have a fun and meaningful time with them and was able to build new friendships.

Moving forward, I will continue to be more open-minded and curious about other cultures. I will also apply the values ( appreciation, respect, patience, responsibility, and independence) I have learned from this trip. Lastly, I will treasure every friendship made, even though we may not know each other for long, and cherish all the experiences gained from this trip

What I learned was...1) Traditional Bruneians used local materials like bamboo, palm leaves, and wood to build houses and tools, showing a deep understanding of their natural environment.

2)The Kampong Ayer (Water Village) was a thriving community with its own forms of transportation, like wooden boats, and traditional fishing tools such as fish traps and nets.

3)Bruneians had unique metalworking and boat-building skills, which they passed down through generations, often within families or small communities.

2 aspects of the daily lives of Bruneian in the past... 1) People lived in houses on stilts over water, which is very different from the land-based homes we commonly see today. This way of living was adapted to the local river environment.

2) Most tools and crafts were made by hand, such as weaving baskets or making fishing gear, compared to today's reliance on machines and factory-made items.

One question I would like to ask... was there any conflicts that happened in such a united, Kampong spirited area like Kampong Ayer?

I am thankful for my schoolmates, teachers and the tour guides!! They have been wonderful companions throughout the whole trip! The tour guides were very knowledgeable about Brunei and I really learned alot from them, the teachers were so understanding and did their best in keeping everyone safe and healthy!! The most challenging part was definitely trying to communicate with the Bruneians, especially the older generations, they only knew how to speak malay and a little bit of English which made it hard to communicate with them like during the gadong Day market, the stall owner spoke malay only and thankfully Mr Fareeq helped me out by interacting with the stall owner so thank you Mr Fareeq! ❤️ Moving forward, this trip really inspired me to want to learn more about Singapore Culture, although Singapore may be a young country there are still many culture I have yet to explore!

I chose this photo as the trip to the STPRI, I enjoyed ever moment of it! The students were really sweet and warm, my buddy was really fun and very skilled in explaining her country towards me! I am so happy I went home with her number 😊
