Realism. What is it? When was it? (Jason Le)

Realism first emerged in the 1840's. It is a non-sugarcoated version of what the world is actually like. Instead of making higher ups seem even better, they would tell the lifestyle of every class and what they have to overcome. Portrays real world conflicts that we need to overcome. Realism for example can be the news being brutally honest about certain things that is currently happening even if people might believe that it is not. There could be backlash for actually using realism since it isn't what people would have though and would oppose with their own personal belief. Usually depicts, racism, social classes, world conflicts, etc. In the story "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", the book received backlash for being racist even if that was how life was back then.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn describes the encounter between two distinctive characters, Huck and Jim. Huck is a young boy who experiences a burdening childhood without a present mother and an alcoholic father. Eventually, he is adopted and overlooked by two women, Widow Douglas and Miss Watson. From this, he is introduced to a new lifestyle of school and church. Although, he didn't assimilate to the habits, in which he follows his friend, Tom Sawyer. Their life sublimated as they encountered a stash of gold. Subsequently, Huck's father returns and threatens him for the money. As Huck's father imprisons him, he decided to escape, thus, leading him to encounter Jim. Jim is an African American slave who attempts to leave the south in aspiration to entering a free state.

Realism emerged in France in the 1840's. It was created to oppose Romanticism which dominated French literature. Realism supported the lower class instead of the higher ups like the Romanticism. They wanted to break away from past figures and formal art style. Resulted in some plain depictions of life that was much more accurate even if it was dull. It was different compared to the dramatic style of romanticism since it would only tell the struggles of high class people and what they had to do. On the other hand, realism shows all classes and how each has a different type of struggle they have to fight against.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn depicts a prevalent conflict of racism and discrimination. Throughout the story, Mark Twain exposes the issues as he implements the pejorative terms used by many individuals at his time. This pertains to the character, Jim, who satisfies the characteristics of the execrated individuals. In spite of slavery, Twain provides the historical context of the distinction between northern and southern states. Therefore, it precisely addresses the incentive of Huck and Jim's encounter. Moreover, the narrative proposes the themes of moral and intellectual education. Huck's adventure renders the influences of others, as he learns to depend one of the properties. Furthermore, the story teases the "civilized" society, contradicting his experiences throughout his own society.
