The trenches protected them from poison gas. They were used when the more powerful force would yell “dig in” and then the team would go into the trenches.

There were also infections such as trench foot and trench mouth. The disease and/or infections could lead to sickness, amputated limbs, and even death. Also things like floods would happen, people could get lice, and there was rats that also carried disease.

These coats were water-resistant which gave an advantage in extreme weather conditions, and time for faster and more efficient fights.
