Swarming

The flight to structure a future colony is called swarming

One of the main reasons bees start to swarm is because they do not have enough space to “live”.

The workers rebuild cells for the queens, then the past queen deposits the eggs.

When a colony becomes overpopulated, the queen’s egg laying power then reduces.

The swarming also affects the colonies reproductive system, it is through swarming that the colony has the motivation to reproduce.

Swarming is a good thing, swarming is able to create another colony.

When the new queen cells are covered with wax numeral worker bees leave and the past queen too.

Many workers trail behind in the hive to watch - over the new larvae and queen bees.

Another important part of swarming is the bees give of pheromones to communicate, the queen bee gives off the most important pheromone which is when she is trying to attract her workers to encourage them to build a comb

When the worker bees surround the queen this is the main foundation of how a storm is made.

Then after the eggs have turned into a pupae the worker mask the cells with wax.

If a storm needs to be stopped you are able to add a box to expand the space the bees need.

Stung Book Reference

While I had been completing my research I had learned that Queen bees are the main part of the colony. Without them there would bee no colony at all. Although the queen bee is important, the worker bee also takes a huge role in the colony too. The worker bee is the one that builds and "takes care of the queen bee." There is also the honeycomb and beeswax, this is one of the main sources we use as a society. Swarming is another part of the colony, this occasionally happens when the bees feel as if they do not have enough space to live. Usually when a swarm occurs the colony will grow two times bigger after the queen bee mates with the drones. Lastly, Bees have many enemies varying from huge to small, and they can all hurt the colony in an amazing way. A reference that has been put in place in the book Stung is that animals are going extinct. On chapter 18 pages 125 and 126 Bowen explains to Fiona that all animals that have been on the outside of the wall have died. This means that bees have died too, which causes the society to go limp because of the resources we need from the honey and many other things.

Honeycomb

The honeycomb is used to raise young bees and to stock food.

Bees Build their combs out of hexagon shaped cells, this is because these cells improve the strength of the comb, this also decreases the chance of a predator being able to destroy the comb.

Most of the time the cells that are containing bees are developed in the center of the comb.

Hexagon shaped cells are also more efficient because the workers are able to build them quicker and they are much more supportive than any other shape.

In the comb there are two cells that are made to forage the nectar the bees collect from flowers.

Honey doesn't just help out the bees but honey is common source for carbohydrates and a balanced diet.

The honeycomb is used many times depending on the season, for example during spring and summer many different cells are used to raise young bees.

During fall most if not all production stops, Winter gives the opportunity for bees to hoard honey till spring begins.

Honey is made from the comb, which is the bee's number one resource for eating.
