Google maps is a good way to involve children around the globe as well as more local areas. With the zoom-in feature, you can show children how big the world is and they can travel where ever they want to go. As well as this, children can turn on street view and have a deeper look at their local areas. Games can be played such as 'find your house' or map a route to a specific location in the area.

Nevertheless, the big worldview might make children confused and not as accessible as they might not know to work a computer. In addition, sometimes the map may not be the realistic size as often the countries are disshapen.

This app allows you to highlight specific countries that you want to learn about and then turns it into a game where you have to guess where they are. You can either guess based off names, flags or capital cities. There is also a section where you can look at a world map and each county is highlighted in a different colour perhaps making it more interesting for children.

The downside would be that children can pick the countries they want to learn about and they might not try to push themselves to learn new countries. Also you can not see a satellite view of the countries however for younger children - KS1 or lower KS2 it is fun and engaging.

This app/ website is a good way for teaching KS2 students especially those who are in year 5/6 about different areas and views they can look into their hometowns, school and shops near them which gets them engaged in finding their way around areas that are special to them. Strengths of using this to teach children is it shows physical features like houses, streets and it shows humans too. Further they can look into the local and wider world so they aren’t stuck looking at one area so they can do comparisons between the two. However a weakness is they may struggle to find their way around it. A great strength for year 6 pupils is they can navigate a route they could take to get to the secondary school they will be attending.

YouTube has many different geography videos that are tailored directly to children. They can cover any single aspect of geography and they tend to really engage the children and make them feel like they are just watching TV. Its also free!

A limitation of this though is that anyone can upload a video to youtube meaning the information children are being taught, may be incorrect. Thats why its important for adults to watch the videos first and fact check them before showing the children.

GeoFlight Europe is an app for children aged 5+ and it focuses on teaching children names and whereabouts of different places in Europe. The aim is to see how quickly you can fly your virtual plane to a certain destination. Children get the opportunity to learn the names of 95 cities, 43 capitals in 43 countries. This game makes learning and memorising places more fun and interesting. However children may be distracted by the entertainment of the game and pay little attention to the geography it is trying to teach them.

This website is a perfect way to instruct children on how to use a compass, using videos to engage the children. There are also activities the children are able to undertake to help consolidate their learning and ensure they have understood the information provided to them. This website is perfect for the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners, making it inclusive for all. It also suggests at the bottom of the page, more websites similar to what they have been learning to give them something to go on to if they finish.
Although this website is engaging and fun, including videos to demonstrate the process of learning how to use a compass, it does not go into great detail and some children may need further reading to develop their understanding. In addition, the 'fun' aspect of the videos may take away from the process of information provided in the video, resulting in a lack of information being absorbed.

This app is fun, colourful and interactive allowing children to choose certain areas of the world, such as Europe and allow them to learn where the countries are located by doing a puzzle. The app randomly messes up the countries and it's the children's job to put them back into place. Positively, this helps develop the children's knowledge of the world and where countries are located. Children are more likely to use this app as it is fun and easy to do - it is also free which is a bonus.

However, the downside would be that it is just a puzzle, children can trial and error with fitting the countries into gaps which doesn't necessarily mean they have learnt anything. The app also doesn't offer anything else, only puzzles.

They can even see times for sunrises and sunsets, which children may find fascinating to watch.

However, BBC Weather is less interesting visually than other resources, and may appear boring to younger children. The app shows maps full of colour which would be good for the younger children but I also believe that the activities are well suited towards KS2. The app is very interactive as it includes puzzle maps, jigsaws, drag and drop games which will excite the children and motivate them to do well. The app has been rated 5 stars and has been teacher approved.
However, the downside would be that although most activities on the app are free, some of them are not which would be frustrating for the children.

PlantNet - Plant Identification App

PlantNet is a great way to teach children about the wide variety of plants and flowers we have in the world around us. Children can go outside during a lesson take a photo of a plant, flower or tree they can see, and the app will use this photo to identify the name of the plant, the main features of the plant and information on which family the plant belongs to. This is helpful to develop children’s understanding of different types of plants and their characteristics, whilst also supplying a fun investigative activity to do.

However, a limitation of this app is that it is not always 100% accurate and the app may identify the plant as different to what it actually is.

This website is really useful to teach a range of children old or young. However it is especially good for teaching children in KS1/2 as most of the learning comes from pictures, interactive videos and small compact information. This then gives children the right knowledge without overloading them with unnecessary information. On the other hand that could also be a limitation with the website, because of the small compact information. For example they are being taught the key information but if they wanted to develop their knowledge further they would not be able to use this site.

A strength of using the weather app on an iPhone would be that it would be accessible for children from a young age. This is due to the fact that the app uses symbols to represent the weather, there for children from about the age of 3 would recognise what each symbol means and could analyse and predict the weather for the day.
A limitation would be not all children would recognise the spelling of the day and may not be able to make the links of how the weather changes through the day.

BBC Bitesize has a variety of different resources that you could use to help children learn and understand about the different aspects of geography, such as countries and fieldwork. It also includes games which is useful for KS1 to learn as they will be more engaged learning through games. BBC Bitesize includes videos that children can watch and interpret if they struggle to read.

The information is displayed clearly and straight to the point so the children will be able to understand better.

A limitation is that with the videos some children may be distracted by what is happening in the video and not taking on what information is being given out. Another limitation is that the website is quite simple and does not go into detail so therefore those in KS2 may have to search elsewhere for the level of detail that they might need.

This app is free, fun and interactive for young children. This learning platform incorporates games and geographical knowledge into an interactive learning activity. Fun and simple games allow for easy understanding of new geography knowledge and fun facts. Flags and maps are included which is an excellent opportunity for children who want to pick up a new skill.
Different game types (e.g: spinning globe and jigsaw mode) allows children to engage in whatever they find suits their ability and prior-knowledge level best. For older primary students they can also use flash cards and explore fun facts about different countries around the world; there are also 4 mini-quizzes to test knowledge at the end.
The only down side to using apps such as these are that it does involve screen time and sometimes the games and visual can distract children from absorbing important information. Otherwise, this app is easy to navigate and adaptable to each child’s learning ability.

Google maps is a useful app to use in teaching geography to children as it can give perspective on different locations and provide a map for the teacher to begin to encourage basic map reading skills. You can zoom both in and out, looking at the pupils local areas. It also introduces them to looking at standardised symbols and road networks. Google maps could also be used in street view to look at images of the children’s local areas from ground view. Using google maps could also have negatives though as it is not as interactive as other map reading apps and is not child friendly in the sense that it’s not colourful or 3D. Google maps could be combined with using other apps, websites or internet searches to give more information about the locations the children are looking at, the culture and what is actually in that location. You could also use others educational websites such as BBC bitesize to look at seasonal changes and weather in these areas.

BBC bitesize is a great way to introduce children to Maps as all the information is broken down into sections. For example "What is a map?" and "How to use a map" makes it more understandable for the children as all the information given to them isn't just given to them as one and the broken down structure enables them to learn step by step. The fact that BBC bitesize also includes video clips also engages the children as it means they won't just be writing down or reading information for long periods of time.

A disadvantage of BBC bitesize however would be that perhaps not all the information required can be found on this website and using this website may involve using other website as well.

I have found a website named ‘geographical association’ which focuses on environmental issues and specifically, ‘How we can protect the local environment’. It is a strong website due to the linking of real-life organisations, the, ‘Year of green action’. This will help the young children, and in this case Key stage 1 and 2, feel more connected to the lesson and also allows them to engage outside of the classroom. The website also distinguishes clearly between KS1 and KS2 with reference to the national curriculum showing the clear progression which will be made and the objectives which need to be reached. However, it lists some potential lesson ideas and the idea of discussion with the children around what they eat and the clothes they wear. This may be uncomfortable for younger more disadvantaged children to talk about. Therefore, we must be careful when teaching this to be considerate and aware of all backgrounds so we can adapt the activities where needs be.

It allows children to visualise the environment and learn about new countries, cities, buildings and landmarks. The 3D map allows children to pan, rotate, tilt and zoom which encourages them to explore the world. The app is beneficial to children as it provides geographic content, it is easy to use, and it encourages independent research on new findings. Furthermore, the app uses direction which allows them to ask enquiry-based questions. As the website is free it allows all children to access it within school as they have access to technical equipment despite always having access within schooling hours teachers would have to consider accessibility limitations if they were to set any work for their students.

BBC bitesize can be used for both ks1 and ks2 due to its variation in skill concepts. the website is very specific and well organised making it easy for children, teachers and parents/ guardians to navigate round to ensure the child is working under the correct age group.

However, with every technical aspect there are limitations which can occur. For instance, the website may crash meaning children are unable to access it which could cause an issue if a teacher had planned a lesson around using bbc bitesize.

Puzzle World is an app designed to help a child with geography. Some strengths are The app has a number of countries to discover each with colourful illustrations and fitting puzzle parts. Children will have the opportunities to learn about different cultures and flags, anthems and national traditions. it is also accessible to younger children it can be age and stage appropriate from 3-11 years of age. Some weaknesses of the app is that due to this feature it could mean that older children may not be challenged and this could limit their geography learning.

This app is an excellent way to teach ages 3-7 about the world. The app is colourful and very interactive allowing children to pick different animals and see which parts of the world they come from. It includes puzzles, colouring and spot the difference to bring it down to a level which is easy to understand and helps children learn.
The positive elements of the app is that it helps children gain an appreciation for the similarities and differences of living around the world, there are many educational games and activities, they can create their own passport to help them travel around the app. The negatives of the app is that you do have to pay £5 for most of the features meaning it would not be available to everyone as the free version is very limited.
In all I feel this app is great to bring geography to younger students in a really interactive way.

Strengths: This app involves interactive games and quizzes so that children can actively learn about countries all over the world. The app teaches children about flags, famous landmarks, the countries of the world and even the weather, therefore covering a broad range of geographical knowledge. It even shows the average population of the country, so children can start to determine how busy places are. The layout is colourful and fun and so will entice children and keep them entertained while they learn.

Limitations: It doesn’t cover many particular geographical skills, only knowledge, which is still important but the two should go hand in hand. Some of the features just display information which is not particularly exciting, it might be more interesting if there were videos to play as well. Also the ads are annoying.

It also highlights the most important geographical keywords and provides videos that are basic and understandable for the children at this level that are engaging and colourful. This could provide to be a disadvantage however as there is only a small amount of information and it doesn't really elaborate, so if a teacher, or even child, wanted to investigate more on maps, they would then have to search for another source of information whether this be the next level of BBC Bitesize or an entirely new source.

Apple maps is a free resource available on all Iphones. The app is easily accessible for children and is a good way to show an accurate view of any location. The 'directions' feature is particularly helpful and can be used to show children directions to local attractions. The compass feature on the app can help give a real idea of direction. Although this app might be useful if resources are limited; The app does not show a realistic perspective which may render children confused. For year 4 upwards the app could be a handy tool for navigation but younger children may not understand the app. Additionally, the app does not display bright colours which will not be very engaging for children and they could lose interest quickly.
In conclusion, the app could be a great resource for older children or simply showing children directions to the local playground and allowing them to follow but generally the app is targeted towards adults.

In addition, it is good to use for enquiry activities through direction and it is easy to use . However, this app is only suitable for upper KS2 as it may be difficult for younger children to use and understand it. In addition, sometimes this app has inaccuracies so teachers need to check it before they use it in a lesson to make sure it is working and taking them to the accurate location.

These resources will have been particularly useful during the pandemic as children can access these resources from home. Within the Key Stage 1 section, there are lots of interactive videos and activities for the children. Children are can read the small inputs of information before completing simple activities such as dragging and dropping to consolidate their understanding. As the name suggests, the website is full of 'bitesize' chunks of information so the child doesn't feel overwhelmed.
As a result of how exciting and engaging the website is, the children may feel distracted by the bright colours and pictures on the website. This could result in the child not fully digesting the knowledge given in the videos. A lot of the activities also have an ability to continuously repeat the answers until you get them correct. This could result in children not fully processing the information and then guessing the answers at the end until they get them correct.

Especially during the pandemic Bitesize played a crucial part in providing children with adequate learning resources and keeping them on track whilst they weren’t physically in the classroom. Bitesize provides fun interactive activities to help maximise the children’s learning as well as quizzes and videos. It is important that they have various ways of giving the children the information because every child is unique, and they don’t all learn in the same way. Although BBC Bitesize is useful but as highlighted by the pandemic not all children may have access to the internet so they may be at a disadvantage. Also Bitesize does have information but they don’t tend to go in depth with the information so children may have to go elsewhere to gather information.

BBC Bitesize is a great, easy to navigate, engaging website where students throughout primary, secondary, and above can gain access to enjoyable ways of learning. It is a useful tool that includes easy to understand information, backed up by research, photos, and evidence to enable children to have an understanding context about the topics they are learning. It incorporates ways to get the children involved in different interactive ways, through play, quizzes, and other pleasurable tasks which in turn transpires learning into enjoyment. A disadvantage of this educational learning source is the information provide is limited, however at the very least the website provides a platform for children to become aware of the information, and then from there they can expand on their knowledge by resorting to more detail’s resources.

BBC Bitesize has a lot of resources that are useful to help children with a range of subjects. For geography KS1 they can explore different countries around the world, watch videos and even play games for them to understand different aspects without being overwhelmed with information. Being an online resource means it was a helpful teaching tool during the pandemic which is good in possible similar circumstances in the future. Their website is very clearly laid out and very clear instructions so the children could “navigate“ themselves around the website exploring different areas of geography. It illustrates the importance of different key word they will need through education and study of geography
However, the topics just cover the basics and don’t go into much detail. For KS1 this may be helpful to prevent confusion but children at exceed in certain subjects may need more in depth resources. Also some of the videos may be distracting to the pupils and instead of learning from them they are just entertained which doesn’t benefit them in their studies.
