He heard Phil, who was clinging to a fuel tank, his head was covered in blood. He also spotted Mac, who had the look on his face, a look of someone who knew he wasn't going to survive the catastrophe. The three men pushed the two rafts together. The horrors they must have felt and seen was almost unbarring. They heard a man drown, but had no idea who or exactly where he was, he never resurfaced. The sadness settled in after awhile, hearing yet another man lose his life in the midst of a struggle to survive. Fear surfaced in their minds of being stuck and no way to know where they were going or how to find land. God would only know if they were going to survive this or not. Mac became extremely fearful and lost control. He ate a major part of the food portion however Louis understood his moment of irrational thinking and fear. The chocolates were kept in the box because they were "formulated to be highly caloric and melt-resistant". Louie also found several half-pint tins of water, a brass mirror, a flare gun, sea dye, a set of fishhooks, a spool of fishing line, and 2 air pumps in canvas cases. One night louie woke up and soon realized that Mac had eaten the rest of the chocolate. The men contemplated drinking the sea water, but realized that there was way too much salt and it would kill their kidneys. In the beginning of their journey at sea, they didn't have enough bait to catch fish. The men tried to drink the rain as a source of water. They decided to kill a bird to eat it, but they couldn't bare eating a raw bird. Instead, they used it as bate to lure fish onto the line. All they could think about was food. Louie talked about recipes all day everyday to entice their hunger. Their skin was burned, swollen and cracked. They all lost a massive amount of weight. They were anywhere between 6-12 feet. Each shark had different fish which followed side by side. Between the 2 planes, there were a total of 21 people missing.  Louie and the other men saw a B-25 plane above, and rifled their flare gun but the plane didn't stop for them. The next morning, they heard a B-24 and fired the flare gun, once again. The men shot the flare gun so close to the plane, they thought it was going to hit it. Due to the clouds, the plane didn't see the flare. If the crew saw it, they would've been saved because the plane above was Daisy Mae. George "Smitty" Smith was a member of Daisy Mae and realized there were boxes in the water and went to go search. Mac basically thought that by screaming "we are all going to die", it would make him feel better. While, Louie prayed and prayed and prayed because he believed it would make a severe impact on their destiny. Louie also slapped Mac because he wasn't having it with his attitude and the fact that they ate the remaining chocolates which could be life or death. The next letter that arrived at the families homes were the letters informing them about the men lost at sea.
