Given that exam week is approaching, with you having a target grade in mind, as well as organization requirements, it is necessary that you manage your time effectively. You may have made plans of catching up with friends; however, you have to set your priorities straight. Hence, instead of attending a party tonight, you choose to stay home and focus on studying and accomplishing requirements. However, doing this may lead to your experiencing the fear of missing out (FOMO) because you may feel like you are being left out on a night of socialization.

Choosing to study over coming to a party means that you opted to stay home and avoided the company of others, thus the lack of socialization. Nevertheless, you may still modify the situation and achieve interaction with others by inviting your study buddies over and reading together and having fun. You know you may still have fun with the comfort of your friends because the fun doesn't always begin and end with parties.

Moreover, you can also opt to turn your phone off and not check any social media sites while studying so you won’t be distracted if ever some of your peers are posting about the party they’re attending. This will help you avoid comparing the experience of partying over studying.

Choosing to study is a valid reason not to attend a party. Instead of focusing on the negative side, change your perception and look on the brighter side. You have your priorities set already, and we're sure you want to get that QPI. Oh, but you still want to party? Worry not! Once you get that QPI, you can throw a party to celebrate, which can be even bigger than the one you missed.

At the same time, you may also get gratification from the fact that you chose to study tonight, thus, more chances of getting higher grades.

While you might feel left out, it is better to prioritize your goal QPI since it matters more in the long run. It is better to focus on the tasks at hand to reduce the intensity of present, as well as future, pain. This can also increase your productivity as your attention would be undivided. Break up your workload into smaller tasks that can be concrete goals for yourself. Aside from that, think that it is great that your friends want to have fun with you at the party, and that they have your best interests in mind. Remember that they understand and won’t leave you out of things just because you didn’t join one single party. In line with this, let go of some workload that you know aren't your priorities in order to avoid this situation from happening again. In this scenario, it’s best to prioritize studies over organization work and parties. If the organization requirements become overwhelming, it is best to contact a superior in the organization so you can explain your situation and this may help lessen your workload. Worse comes to worst, end your friendship with them, and choose a set of friends that are also studious like you. This would ensure that you'll be able to avoid this type of situation the next time around.

Communication with the concerned parties would be good because they are the ones who are most affected by your poor priority management. To your friends, ask them for help and tell them the truth. I will also explain why I can’t join their party--that is, the timing is just unlucky as I have too many things at hand, like examinations, requirements, and organization commitments. Furthermore, since our exam week is coming up, I will dedicate the time I have to review. This is the best choice for me as I am aiming for a certain QPI. I will also address my commitments with my organizations by accomplishing the requirements assigned to me, as it is my responsibility as an organization member to contribute to the organization to the best of my abilities.

To address this, I can incorporate a reward system while studying that will help lift up my mood. I will set aside other commitments to focus on accomplishing one task first and moving on to another once I’m satisfied with my work. To help me stay focused, I will also avoid going on social media, as seeing my friends’ posts during the party will just distract me and probably make me feel bad for missing out. Most of all, I would pay attention to my long-term goals as motivation while I accomplish my academic and extracurricular requirements. However, I can remind myself that they understand the dilemma I am currently in and that they will not feel mad about my decision to not attend the party. Instead of viewing my academics as a barrier to my social life, I will tell myself that it is normal to make compromises for academic requirements. Also, to combat frustration while reviewing, I can remind myself that it will be difficult starting a new topic, but it will be easier if I put more effort and time into studying these topics. Moreover, instead of thinking that I don’t deserve to be in my org because I cannot handle the responsibility I accepted, I can focus on the fact that I was accepted as part of the organization and I can be honest with them if the workload is too much for me to handle. Besides, looking back on how I have been struggling with this situation since high school will help affirm that I will be able to do it again as I’ve been through this before.

In order to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed, I would start by selecting situations that are of the highest priority and work from there. I resist the temptation to attend the party and instead prioritize academics.

After making this decision, a variety of emotions arise - stress, over upcoming exams and org requirements; fear of failing the expectations I have set for myself; sadness, over my unavailability to spend time with friends; frustration, over having difficulty balancing all my responsibilities and promises; and perhaps guilt, for not being able to keep my promise to my friends and classmates. The goal now is to help settle these emotions, which leads us to the next steps of the emotional regulation cycle.

However, it is also vital to include certain social situations amidst work in order to prevent burnout. Instead of attending the party, I would make it up to my friends by having a short call in between study breaks to let off some steam. These online social interactions are easier to regulate and practice self-control as compared to doing it physically, where it would be more difficult to get out of. In addition, this helps us cope with the stress of work and the sadness of missing out by creating a compromise. This also gives me an opportunity to tell my friends that, although I am unable to attend, we'll have lots of time to enjoy each other's company when all my responsibilities are over with.

While it is saddening to break promises of attending a party I myself wanted so badly to go to, I would rather direct my attention to the possible consequences if I did go to that party instead. The party would have been a short-term relief, but I knew in the end that it would lead to greater feelings of stress. With this in mind, I can finally work on my very long to-do list in order to slowly but surely take things off of my plate. There are probably more negative effects to incur later on had I neglected my tasks, so I will use my physical and emotional energy into preventing those from happening.

It’s hard to shake off the negative emotions that come with doing difficult tasks with no immediate satisfaction. In this case, it may be frustrating that I’m seemingly unable to balance studies and relationships - after all, all those other people going to the party, even my friends, so why aren’t I going? Instead of thinking that way - like I’m punishing myself with all this work - it’s important to take a step back and consider the facts: everyone else has a drastically different life from mine; I myself have made certain commitments, and I must fulfill them in order of priority. This work isn’t punishment, it’s fulfillment for my life’s goals - why else did I decide to study this course at this university, and why else did I make those commitments to those organizations? There is joy to be found in studying and org work. By doing this, I have successfully reframed the situation in order to lessen the negative emotions - which often prevent us from long term-thinking in exchange for momentary thought and action.
