One work that I love that we studied this semester is the Pieta sculpture by Michelangelo. First of all I think sculpture chipped away out of stone is incredible, and to see how well Michelangelo accomplished this piece is outstanding. The anatomy is so lifelike. Every detail, whether it be fabric or the skin fold of Christ's armpit just proves to me that Michelangelo knew exactly what he was doing and had done a lot of research before this, studying the human figure. He also was brilliant in making Mary much bigger than Christ to really capture that mother son moment between the two. If Michelangelo had made it accurate to size Mary would be a little frail old woman, drowning in the weight of her adult son. This sculpture however, captures Mary's purity and beauty. It also was clever of him to put his name on the sash of Mary's clothing so viewer's have no doubt that the sculpture was made by the one and only Michelangelo
