Things like a daily warm up; reminders to read objectives and instructions; general classroom behaviors. I also spend dedicated time to teaching the class what respect looks like in the classroom in various situations. Then we leave these posted year round and review if needed.

When creating a rubric I am known to put in the higher score categories options for taking a risk. If a student tries something out of the box I will reward that in some way, even if it is a success. I also try to design projects that challenge and push my students to the edge. I model how to get to the end point and I am with them every step of the way as they struggle.

With speaking assignments I start them off easy allowing them to record an assignment verses giving it in front t=of the class. Then when we go over the score we talk about ways they can get better and ways they can move closer to public speaking.
