Interviewer: Duong Do
Interviewee: Melanie Aaldering
Date: 5/12/2016
Time: 10am
Place: Basecamp at school
Personal reflection:
Melanie Aaldering is my classmate also my team member in BsP group. We decided to have a proper interview at school before class because we found it is easy and convenient to fit our own schedule. During the interview, we sat nearby and talked face to face. Due to we are in te same BsP group for quite a long time, we were really comfortable to each other and the interview's atmostphere was cozy.
Melanie is the person that always looks happy, friendly to everyone, I choose topic friend as interview's question in order to understand her character more.
I then asked her a series of questions related to how she thinks, her opinion about friendship. She stated that although she has many friends, she only has one best friend who means everything to her and who she will do everything for. From Melanie's perspective, trust is the most important for a friendship, especially for the best buddy. She was smiling quite often when she was talking about her close friend and about friendship opinion. "Friendly, trusting, reliable, genuine, listener, supportable, someone who loves you no matter what" are characteristics that needed to be her friends. She often hangs out with her friends and talks to them everyday, be willing to protect her friends whenever they get troubles or difficulties such as being bullied at school. I realize that Melanie is not that person who always appears with artificial smile, she has just been social and friendly, she is honest to her friends as well. I find out that our opinion about friendship is truly the same, honesty is completely important to be our friends because we often share our feelings and our secrets to them, besides, friendship is something really meaningful as same as our family. However, I am not able to be friendly to everyone , even I used to talk to them, I find it is kind of hard and comlicated. From my perspective, i only smile when I feel really happy and it will be natural. I do not show my emotion quite often and do not smile a lots as her does, because I think that it will make people arounded you misunderstand and sometimes a little annoyed.
What did I learn from conducting an interview?
It is the best way to have an accurate and thorough communication between me and Melanie. I have to have control of my question order (open questions in particular), and I have to make sure that all the questions will be answered properly. It is really considerable to make interviewee willing to cooperate, make her as comfortable as possible, because if people do not want to talk, setting up an interview is a waste of time. Another essential thing is to arrange interview time, date, place, it should be match with interviewee's agenda otherwise she will try to push the interview in a rush and not serious way. Besides, face to face interview was a great way to gather information. I had more flexibility to ask question and repeat questions, I was able to watch non-verbal behavior and had control over the physical environment. However, it was kind of time consuming to conduct a face to face interview. I had to begin with a small talk, tried to put her at ease and be natural, listened to her in advance, especially I did try to remember the goal in mind. I had to keep the conversation focused on my questions
