Hi, my name is BanSoHyeon. I’m a first-grade high school student in Korea. I read your story in The Rabbit Listened, and I learned a lot about friendship from it.

At first, when your tower fell, you looked very sad and confused. Many animals came to help you, but they all said different things. One said to talk, another said to shout, and others told you to do something else. But none of them really helped your heart. Only the rabbit came, sat next to you, and listened without saying anything. That was the most helpful thing.

Your story made me think about what a true friend is. A real friend is not someone who always gives advice. Sometimes, we don’t need many words. We just want someone to stay with us and listen. Being with a kind friend makes us feel safe and not alone.

Hello, Bunny. My name is Lee Min-hee, and I'm 17 years old living in Incheon. I once read a book called 'The Rabbit Listened' when I was in middle school, and I was surprised that my thoughts about it changed from when I read it in middle school to when I read it in high school. Back in middle school, I was just focused on reading an English book and thought that the empathy and comfort shown by various animals could be the best for each of them. However, after reading the book this time, I felt like I could think more from Taylor's perspective regarding the comfort the animals offered. Just looking at the people around us, there are friends who need time alone when they feel bad and others who need to talk to get rid of the bad elements. It seems like Taylor was a friend who needed some time alone. When the chicken came over to talk, when the bear said to yell, when the elephant asked her to picture what she looked like, when the hyena encouraged her to smile, and when the ostrich suggested hiding, and when the kangaroo wanted to clean everything up, and even when the snake said to knock down the others' things, Taylor didn’t want to do anything. But you quietly approached and sat with her without saying anything; Taylor first asked, 'Will you stay with me?' Your actions might have been your own form of comfort done thoughtlessly, but that comfort meant a lot to Taylor.

I read this book and thought, 'How have I been comforting others?' I realized that regardless of the friend's personality, I have just been there next to them, offering comfort by patting them. Of course, it would be great if this way of comforting helps and strengthens the other person, but I think it might not be suitable for someone who needs time alone. Then when I pondered, 'What kind of comfort do I want to receive?' I felt that I want the comfort of having someone stay by my side.

I know what you were going through.

Were you upset that your hard-work came crashing down in an instant? I've been there too. When I was a middle school student, I studied hard and took a test, but I didn't sleep well the night before and failed the test.

At that time, I felt as upset and empty as you. However, just like the rabbit understood your feelings and stayed by your side, I think I was able to get up again and study harder thanks to the comfort and encouragement of my friends. In the book, when something happens, the animals suggest various alternatives, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to just suggest solutions without considering your feelings.

What I felt from the book is that when something happens to the other person, instead of trying to solve the situation, if you first understand the other person's condition and then try to solve the problem, you will come up with a better way to deal with it. For example, when students fight at school, if the teacher listens to the students' position first, understands their feelings at the time, and takes the time to talk to each other, I think it will be resolved without a bigger conflict.
