They weren't happy with the way the church was run and all the catholic influence and wanted it to be completely purified. The Puritans completely believed in God's existence and everything that came with it. They truly believed that the church should be in complete control over the government and be respected by all. A lot of people would be accused of being a witch if they had been in a fight and they would falsely accuse them of witchcraft. Some of the women at these trials would complain that they felt pain as if they were being pinched. The way they figured out if the woman was a witch was to strip her completely naked and check for a third nipple. They believed that the third nipple was used to feed demon babies. Miller was was mainly known for being the first person that refused to provide evidence of not being a Communist during the McCarthyism time period. After refusing to do so, he was completely blacklisted from Hollywood. His play didn't do so well given that no one wanted to be associated with him. They were constantly in a state of paranoia that the devil was around them. Every time anything went wrong, they considered it to be the doing of the devil. If you were looked at as a sinner, it was the devil's doing and he had possession over your body and made you do bad things.
