Stage 1 Infancy: Trust vs. Mistrust

During this stage of childhood infants first learn to either trust or mistrust people. " Infants' primary task is to learn whether they can trust other people". (Erikson, pg. 402) When infants are fed when hungry or changed from a dirty diaper, they learned to trust that others are dependable. When an infant is ignored of their needs, they learn mistrust and that the world is a dangerous place. When I was an infant and I would cry, an adult would feed me a bottle or pick me up and console me.

During this stage of childhood, toddlers are learning to handle objects on their own. They become more independent. "Toddlers have a strong will in acting without restriction". (Erikson, pg. 404) Some parents feel their child is growing too fast, when they start to do stuff on their own. When I was about 2 years old I remember being able to walk all over the house, and just drag out the pots and pans from under the sink. When my grandma but a baby gate up so I wouldn't go into the kitchen, I felt shame because i was restricted from going into the kitchen getting into stuff.

In this stage, preschoolers start to show motivation with activities they want to do. Like coloring, playing dress up, etc. But when they feel like they have broken a rule, they start to feel upset. "Young children show initiative in conversation, everyday tasks, and play". (pg. 404) When I was 4 years old, I remember playing kitchen in school. I would even fill up the play sink with actual water and take things from the real refrigerator and put it in my refrigerator.

When a child make good grades and is rewarded for it, they demonstaret industry. But when they are being punishedd for showing effort or its not up to the expectations, it shows inferiority. "Children compare their own abilities to those of peers and lose confidence when they come uo short to domains that they value". I remember at the age of 9, I would make the honor roll and bring home the certificates and my grandma would always save them and put them in a photo album or a folder, and just tell me good job. But my peers in class would get money for making good grades. Although hearing your parents say they are proud of you meant more, I wanted money for my grades as well.

Children in this stage are seeking their true self. They are starting to figure whi they really are, looking for their peopl, or maybe even trying new hobbies. "Young people actively engage in soul searching as to who they are, what they believe in, what it means to be a particular race or ethnicity, and where they are going in life". (pg. 404) I was about 13 years old when I got into music and wanting to learn how to play the piano. I then became apart of the marching band, where I was a percussionist and playing the drums. My friends weren't into those things but they sis support me.
