Poe had self-published his first literary work, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827. During his writings, the poems that had made him famous were The Raven, which was published in 1845, and Annabel Lee, a lyric poem published on October 9,1849. Certain tragic events that had sparked the love of this dismal kind of writing was not only due to the event of when his mother had passed away, but because he was sent into adoption and was chosen by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan to be their child. After these trail events, Poe was devoted to a life of law enforcement and later a life of devoting his time to writing pieces of literature. During his time of writing poems and stories, "The Murders of Rue Morgue" had been one of the first ever modern detective writing stories.

At the age of eighteen, Poe could no longer support himself as an individual and decided to join the US military. When he became twenty, he applied for the military school "West Point" and got kicked out two years later. Edgar then marries his wife, Virginia. She was thirteen at the time. Virginia is brought to an end by bursting a blood-vessel while playing the piano. Poe later became an editor for a newspaper for a town nearby, which started his interests for his writing career.

In many of Edgar Allan Poe's stories there is a certain theme that runs along every form of literature that he produces or writes. That theme is a dark and mysterious element added to his stories also known as gothic literature. There are however, many aspects that a story needs to include in order to be considered gothic literature. Some examples of this may include things in a story such as prominent supernatural occurrences, curses of some sort and large quantities of heavy emotions occur during the entirety of the piece.
