  • We like that it creates a community and puts inclusion at the forefront. It fosters a positive environment and encourages students to be themselves while having respect for those different from them. 
  • We dislike that the openness of students in a classroom could create a higher potential for bullying outside of it.

We think it's a good idea to show all sides, however, we are fans of the training idea for students. We thought a parent training to institute anti-bias from a young age and in the home would be more appropriate. Anti-bias has to start young.

This may also have the potential to do the opposite.

Who does the training is important. Them being diverse will create less bias from trainers. It doesn't exclude anyone, its important for students to feel included and an important part in their own education. Knowing their views matter will produce a better outcome.

  • I've certainly experienced and seen bias in the classroom towards myself and other people with queer identities. This was a problem especially in classes revolving around politics, where identities were used as a way to bully others. Students had a tendency to reflect the way we were raised, which wasn’t focused on inclusion when we were young. - Bre

Anti-bias education implemented in the classroom also causes academic success. 

    What we dislike about anti-bias education is that it can create a false sense of security allowing kids to be open about themselves which may lead to bullying.

During my last two years of high school, the teachers were given anti-bias training and many of them chose to read and discuss the book White Fragility, because the diversity of my school was growing whereas it had previously been a mostly white community. The implementation of an anti-bias education program allowed for my teachers to better teach their students.

Conversations about other religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities were shamed on, if not, banned.
