The title card appears nicely and disappears too well, but I think a different font would suit it better as its a bit too bold and clunky.

The music is almost a little too loud throughout the edit but the track is a good choice in itself.

Theres also quite a few pauses and not needed dialogue within the whole edit itself, at points it feels a little dragged out with the extra "umm's" and "err's" just trimming these out would make it flow a lot nicer

- 00:00 the intro feels a little too long! maybe cut a few shots down a little. We dont need 35 seconds of an intro maybe 15-20 would be better.

- 00:36 when the music gets quieter its a bit drastic maybe it should be a bit more smooth and give it more time to fade to the quieter track.

- 00:50 the cuts between "im a farmer" and "i do woodwork" i think should just be one shot between not four different ones, stick to maybe just the track of him talking THEN after hes said those lines switch to B reel.

- 01:28 The cut between "ill show you how to do it" and the next line its a bit cut off and needed more of a gap.

The Intro is jump cuts of the place, J and L cuts are a suggestion to improve the flow, to much "Umm and Aaaa" could be cut off,Also the music is not balanced properly in the background , stabilise the shots could be good and voiceover while he is speaking could be a good idea rather that using a lot of jump cuts.
To improve the storytelling I think sound Design of the place will play a big impac to bring the audience feelings closer to what their seeing.

I think this edit has a lot of potential to be really interesting, after a few tweaks regarding pacing and the overall choice of dialogue.

I feel as though the pace of the edit is really slow. There are some parts that I would take out, for instance when he talks about the people he gets to help him on the farm. I find the way he found the farm really interesting, however i think you could have cut it down slightly to make the explanation a bit clearer. There is a lot of 'um's' that slow down the pace a lot, including more cutaways over him talking and taking out the 'um's' might help speed it all up. At some points, he is quite obviously answering questions that he has been asked, however the audience don't know what those questions are, so it is a bit confusing when he starts a sentence with 'it varies' (02:10) as we don't know what he is referring to. Some of the b-roll choices seem a bit random, when he talks about certain things and the b-roll is completely juxtaposing what he is saying it can cause the audience to lose focus. It also has a very abrupt finish to it, i feel that where as the edit is slow, it is very rushed at the end

Overall, i think the edit just needs speeding up and cut down to ensure that the audience is always interested in what he is saying and what is being shown.

What I love about Built by Life is the music choice, the balance between interior (interview) and exterior (mountatin and wildlife) shots and the way the story revolves around community. How this one man is selfless in allowing to people to see what his life is like, whilst learning about other people's stories.

What I believe could be improved upon from an editing standpoint would be fixing some of the jump cuts (0:42), the slight camera judder (0:07). There was an audio pop at (0:46) and lighting changed at (0:56). Apart from that I believe that this piece has grounds for becoming a very successful short film.

Establishing shots look great, however they go on for too long. It took over 40 seconds for any dialogue to begin. I think this could be a lot snappier.

I also feel like the music is a bit too loud and doesn’t give the subject’s dialogue enough room.

Try to avoid repetition in what the subject is saying as well as awkward pauses.

Use of cutaways is great, they are consistent and match what he’s talking about. However I would suggest trying not to use shaky footage, or perhaps trying to make it a bit smoother with a stabiliser effect (such as warp stabiliser).

The ending of the video also feels quite abrupt, I would add some graphics and let the music fade out.

I think the music choice is stylized correctly for this project however I think at the start
0:07 -0:19 when cutting through the still shots the you should cut to the beat as the shots set the scene but entwined with the music would be perfect.

Music should of been lower, to allow narrative to be highlighted

I suggest you reduce the amount of detail the man goes into as it becomes repetitive and would needs to be restructured as he has great points that are summed up in once sense.

I would personally use b roll to hide jump cuts in between dialogue to invoke emotions allows the story to be told .

6:34 could minimise the repeated information for example the date he moved here could also be one of his first point to set the story.

Cuts shouldn't feel like a interference try to use more cutaways if possible.
