The space race was a figurative mission for the U.S. and the USSR. Both sides tried their best to advance their technology and beat the other to prove they were stronger. The History Channel states, "Beginning in the late 1950s, space would become another dramatic arena for this competition, as each side sought to prove the superiority of its technology, its military firepower and–by extension–its political-economic system." The race continued for years as both sides were formulating new ways to beat the other. Russia ended up beating the U.S. to space with the Sputnik 1, but the U.S. had the first manned mission to set a flag on the surface with the Lunar Excursion. This race was a competition for pride, this reminds me of how I will fight with my siblings for no particular reason.

2. Was this an open conflict or crisis: Why and explain.

The space race was not an open conflict. There was not much that a normal citizen could do to contribute to this competition, because it was fairly private to the government and NASA (The professionals). The History Channel states, "In 1958, the U.S. launched its own satellite, Explorer I, designed by the U.S. Army under the direction of rocket scientist Wernher von Braun. That same year, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a public order creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a federal agency dedicated to space exploration." This explains that the government had ultimate control of this competition, and a citizen's opinion on the cause didn't matter. This reminds me of any decisions my family has to make, (for example, our vacation), my parents have the ultimate decision.

3. Summarize the political ideas that have shaped this conflict.

The biggest political idea that shaped this conflict is the determination of each side to beat the other. Both opponents wanted to prove that they were stronger, and more advanced. The History channel states that "Space exploration served as another dramatic arena for Cold War competition." This explains that the Space Race was an outlet for more competition between the two sides during the Cold War. This reminds me of me and my siblings going to great lengths in competition to prove a point.

5. Identify one human right that was expressed or denied. Explain the human right and provide an example from your topic.

One human right that was expressed during the Space Race was the right to scientific advancement, because both sides were permitted to discover and explore the unknown. The History Channel states, "In the United States, space was seen as the next frontier, a logical extension of the grand American tradition of exploration, and it was crucial not to lose too much ground to the Soviets." This proves that the U.S. (and the USSR) used science more and more in everyday life, and therefore it was accepted more and more, (in replace of some religious beliefs). This reminds me of the introduction of logical methods during the scientific revolution, and how science was more commonly used to answer questions, rather than some religion.

(I found this human right at http://www.un.org/en/sections/issues-depth/human-rights/)
