In science today I learned about the atomic structure. I found it so interesting! Can you believe that all things are made of atoms? Atoms have three sub atomic particles; protons, neutrons, and electrons. The proton and the neutron are both housed in the nucleus, while the electrons move around quickly in something called the electron cloud. Protons have a positive charge, while neutrons are neutral, and electrons are negative. There is so much more, but I couldn't include it all in this letter. Do you have any questions for me? I would love to help you understand atoms better!
- Kayla Dunn

Dear Epsom,
Hey, you salty dog! Just a quick note from your friend Sal. For vacation this year I took the wife & all the little grains to visit the Sands. It’s dry, but you know the Sands are a blast! Here we form a mixture. Being in a mixture is much more fun than being in a solution. The wife never lets me forget that disaster last year with Aquafina. We DISSOLVED. She felt like she was losing her identity and becoming “one with the water!” It was a struggle! The chlorine side of me really went for those positive hydrogen atoms, while my sodium half wanted to get with those negative oxygen atoms. Total mind meld! And the long lines waiting for evaporation! We’ll never dissolve again, that’s for sure! The little grains think the Sands rock, especially once I explained that sand particles are tiny pieces of weathered rock. We can be ourselves around the Sands, keeping all our physical properties, even shape!
Write me back and tell me how it’s going with those roses. Is your oldest grain still considering sports medicine?

Keep your sulfate bonded,

NaCl (“Sal”)
Julie Stewart
McDougle Elementary

Today we observed some pretty cool things in science. We learned that matter can change. My teacher played this really cool game called "who am I'. Our group talked about which item was a solid, liquid or a gas. We learned a ton and it was a lot of fun to talk about science.
-Mel Wallin

Students will be given a graphic organizer and cards to sort. Each group will be expected to sort the cards based upon the comparison concepts so they can collaborate on the differences between pro/eukaryotic cells, a/sexual reproduction, uni/multicellular, auto/heterotropic organisms. They will then do a quick write to elicit their thoughts as to how they organized them and why.
