Gauge glass is one of the best ways for measuring level of liquid in a tank or a boiler. It is one of the common instruments used in ships, fuel tank, and industries. Also known as sight glass, the glass gauge is closely attached with the outer part of the tank for the level of liquid that is seen through the glass. It is marked with minute graduations to measure the level of liquid. One of the main drawbacks of this process is that it only indicates the level closest to the vessel. A visual indication of level can be easily obtained when a part of these vessel is made with transparent material or when the liquid present in vessel goes through the see-through tube. The biggest benefit of installing stop valves is the simplicity they provide in cleaning. The liquid here can be anything ranging from liquified gas, fuel, water, and so forth. There are mainly three types of level glass gauge used in regular life:

The first one is the transparent level gauge. The complete instrument includes two transparent glasses that have a liquid chamber on each side. The liquid level is signified due to the difference between the transparent attributes of these two chambers. For steam or water based applications, the makers usually mount the illuminator on the rear end of gauge and the light rays passing through them are deflected upwards in the water column.

The next one is the magnetic level gauge. This one has a float-containing magnet closely goes after liquid level inside the chamber of liquid, it closely corresponds to the liquid level in tank. The position of float inside chamber is signified by the two-colored flapper with magnet that can rotate by 180 degrees. This sets into a single color along the float traverse.

And the last one is reflex level gauge. The basic principle of reflex level gauge is based over the difference in the refractive indices of vapor and liquids. The liquid column is present inside the liquid chamber recess positioned behind the glass gauge. The light rays that enter from outer side of the gauge either get absorbed or get reflected according to the medium they enter. Whenever these light rays hit the surface of one of these grooves in vapor space, these get reflected to the opposing surface of the grooves and from there, these are totally reflected back in the direction of observation.
