Lois - Reread Ch 2 this weekend! Very timely, bc yesterday told a student who made an error, "Thanks for allowing me a teachable moment." He said you always say that to us and I was the first teacher EVER to thank them for making a mistake! LOL I had 45 kids in my THRIVE Enrichment yesterday rocking Quadratics!!!!

Lois - I love this message from ch 3: Being good at math is not about being fast or first, it’s about being a powerful thinker!

I get so bogged down teaching the standards and Scope and Sequence that I don't have time for the beauty of math. I have to remind myself that my kids are missing out on that very important piece. Stop and smell the flowers. Well, it's STOP and see the beauty of math around us. There's a terrific picture book, A Day with No Math by Marilyn Kaye. A young boy wished there was no math, awaking to find all numbers gone. It's a funny story that makes the point about math in our everyday lives. I am going to read it to my kiddos tomorrow before Spring Break!

Ch 4
Lois - To enjoy learning math, students need to explore, play, and think deeply about concepts. Just wish I had time to really implement the play part in my lessons, but there's a APP https://www.youcubed.org/resource/apps-games/ for that!!! LOL
Also math is not a list of facts and methods to be remembered.

Lois - ch 6 I don't agree all kids are ready for Alg 1 in 8th grade but we should expose them to some of the concepts (maybe the old Gateway curriculum bc that's a lot like our 8th math now) and I believe that will allow Alg 1 teacher to go further. I believe there is plenty of time for advanced classes in HS when students are mature enough to handle them!

Lois - Ch 7 Jo Boaler argues ability grouping is detrimental, and that heterogenious groups can exist in same classroom and ALL students can be taught to have GROWTH mindset. When I taught split classes it was hard. I used Graduated difficulty assignments and students CHOSE their particular assignment w/graduated grading scale. It was difficult to sustain bc some students were lazy and wanted to take the easy way out but when they got grade back and it was a 75 (average) they were not happy!

We have to give teacher tests, county tests to get our grades and then the state has an assessment we have to compute as part of our grade!!!! One thing I like to put on my test is a question that says "Tell me something else you learned that I didn't ask you about." This is a good way for the kids to think about their learning.

Mindset in general: I do think all students can learn. It depends on their interest as to how much effort is put into the lessons. I do think mistakes are great teachable moments. I also agree with groups used within classrooms. I also think each person in the group needs a task and in general I pick groups. I think all students should have a chance to correct mistakes and bring up their understanding before moving on. That Includes the A students as well. I have known some teachers to only allow students who fail a test to correct and bring up their grade. How is that fair?
