However due to having some strict parents I was not allowed to up until recently. Here I am outside with my friends climbing a tree to get a better view of the buildings. I love being outside where I can breathe fresh air and enjoy the sun. 

I plan on traveling in the future with either friends or family to go see what the world has to offer. Traveling is such a big thing for me because I have always been locked up in my room wishing I can see these places that I see on the TV screen. He is a man that is independent and Gung ho (pg 6). In the first chapter Chris  starts off in Alaska sitting beside a road awaiting for someone kind to pick him up. Tanana River (pg . 4) was a place that Chris had passed, Alaska is a place where people think that the unsullied enormity (pg 4) of the Last Frontier (pg 4) will patch the holes in their lives.  A man by the name of Gallien helps Chris get to his next destination. After Gallien drops off Chris at the head of the Stampe Trial he gives him additional supplies and wishes him the best. Gallien was almost going to tell state troopers about Chris however in his mind he assumed any normal (pg 7) person would just leave and walk out of the woods to get help.
Analysis: I admire how Chris can leave his personal belongings, family, future, and etc to do what he wants in his life. Not many people can willingly choose what they want to do in life and pursue it. I wish that Chris was in fact more prepared to enter the forest because his supplies were very limited which would only last him a couple more days max. I wish he would have came out alive to tell his story.

On the northern margin of the Alaskan Range before the hulking ramparts (pg 9) was the trail that Chris took which was called the Stampede Trail. The trail was blazed by a miner in the 1930s named Earl Pilgrim; it led to antimony (pg10)  claims.  A vintage bus from the 1940s is on the trail Chris had taken a photo there which was one of the last pictures he ever took. The bus was rusting incongruously (pg 10) in fireweed just beside the trail. Two men by the name of Samuel and Swanson had taken the trail where they pass the bus where they smell something foul coming from the bus they check it out where they find a note that was left by Chris and they found his decomposed body. His body was taken to Anchorage (pg13) where they preformed an autopsy (pg13) his remains weighed in at 68 pounds and he was unrecognizable. All that was left was his S.O.S note, photos, and portriats. The authorities did not know who Chris was, why he was there, and where he was from. His death was a complete mystery.
Analysis: I wonder why Chris was stuck in the bus because he still had some supplies to hunt for food. He made an S.O.S note and I assume never left his location due to being injured and dying of starvation. I can admire his tenacity and determination to keep going but I feel like there is a point where you must seek help.

A man named Westerberg a hyperkinetic (pg16) person with broad shoulders and a black goatee. He spends every summer running a custom combine (pg16) crew  that follows the harvest. In september 10  driving out he picks up a hitchhiker (pg 16) who identified himself as Alex McCandless.  Westerberg described Alex as hungry and offered him to have dinner at his place with his wife. Alex stayed with them for three days working with Westerberg. Westernberg described Alex to be the hardest worker he had seen, he would have no complains, was extremely ethical (pg 18). After working for him for a bit Alex became enamored (pg 18) with Carthage, he liked the community stasis. Westerberg was a man in his late thirties he has had a run in with the FBI when he met Alex (chris) he would sell black boxes which was illegally unscramble satellite television transmissions. After this situtation Westerberg was caught and sent to jail since Alex had no work he had simply left the grain elevator. McCandless was raised in Virginia by a middle class family. His father was a aerospace engineer, and his mother was his father's partner in work. Chris has 7 siblings. In 1990 he had graduated from A university in Atlanta after mailing his last transcript to his parents he simply did not write to them anymore. He packed his bags and went under the new name Alexander Supertramp. 
Analysis: I wonder why Chris would not stay with Westerberg he seemed like he enjoyed working with him and Westerberg offered him a great job and a place to stay. Why would westerberg do Illegal activiy with black boxes. After University what caused Chris to simply drop everything and leave saying nothing to his big family.

He was sent into the back country 3 months after McCandless left Atlanta . Walsh was here there to tally multiple plants such as the californica (pg 26). While he was there he saw a car that was left abandoned inside the car there was a 25 lb bag of rice, loose change, a football, guitar, etc. This was evidence that is was Chris McCandless's car but the rangers did not know that. Walsh had jump started the car and claimed it for himself the car was called a Datsun (pg 27). Two days after McCandless had set up camp near Lake Mead a wall of thunderheads (pg 28) This was while he was in the car and tried to start the car while the engine was wet which led to him draining the battery (pg 28). This led him to give up on continue his odyssey (pg 29) on foot. At the end of July he hitchhiked with crazy Ernie and continued north. Around August before meeting Jan Burres he got a hitchhiking ticket that was sent back to his parents. Towards the end he kept moving forward making notes in his journal around 7 months later aftering abandoning his Datsun he came back to to where he left it and got some belongings he buried and hitchhiked to vegas. 
Analysis: I wonder what made Chris go through the wash if there is a road? Why would he try to start the car if water was in the engine already. If he had jumper cables why did he not simply wait and ask for someone to start his car?

He was Commuting (pg 39) to work on a bicycle.  While he was there he used his real name rather than his fake name Alex, he had opened a saving account at his local bank using his social security number it was an uncharacteristic (pg 40) break from his cover. His manager was decribing him as someone that was off in his own universe ( pg40). His manager confronted Chris because he smelled bad which caused a drift between them. People did not know that he was a drifter (pg 41), they offered him soap, rides home, etc. After some time he simply quit. After this he met and old man by the name of Charlie which offered him a place to stay it was a small trailer (pg 42). Since he was confronted by his old manager he did not stay long in the trailer after previously exchanging letter with old friends of his he met up with them in Slabs. There Chris had worked with them and socialized. After awhile he said his goodbyes and departed to Alaska. 
Analysis: I wonder why Chris left Bullhead City. Why would he quit his job at Mcdonald's because of something a Manager told you. Why does Chris seem so afraid of confrontation?

McCandless made an indelible (pg 48) impression on a number of people of course his hegira (pg 48). The one that was most affected by Alex was Franz in 1992 after Alex left Jan he went to Anza-Borrego. There he was camping outside sleeping under a tarp under the sand. Everytime he needed provisions (pg 29)  he would hitch or walk 4 miles to a small town. One day when he did that he met Franz and he offered him a ride to his camp. While in the car they were making conversation, Franz is a man that lived alone his wife and kid died in a car accident due to a drunk driver. Franz got into drinking after that he was lonely, however six months later he pull himself out and began to salve (pg 50) his loneliness and began to adopt. He never got over the loss. When he met McCandless he could not get him out of his mind he thought Alex was too nice to be living out with nudists and drunks. So he became friends with Alex and began to hang out with him for a couple of weeks, they would hitch together or stay with Franz in his apartment to eat. Franz taught McCandless how to be a leatherworker . Franz was really fond of Alex. When McCandless said he was leaving to San Diego to gain more money for his Alaska trip. He did not want Alex to leave him he was really sad (pg53) he dropped him off at San diego  a couple days later Alex called Franz and wished him a happy eighty-first birthday. Since Alex could not find work in San Diego he came back to California and asked Franz to pick him up to get his clothes washed and a place to stay for a day. Franz had given Alex provisions before he left which included a machete. When Alex left Franz was so lonely he had moved out of his apartment and went to live in the old camp sight where Alex stayed. Franz waited for Alex in his camp until he heard the news that he had died which had broke him. Franz was so hurt by this that he started to drink again hoping that it would kill him.
Analysis: Why didn't Franz go with Alex if he was so emotionally attached. Why is alex so hell bent on going to alaska.

There he was trying to fix it because it had some issues that needed he was getting snarly (pg 62) he is still waiting for Alex McCandless to come back to work. 7 months earlier Alex had walked into the grain elevator and announced that he would start working again. Alex would do any job that nobody would tackle. Westerberg tried teaching Alex how to use the front end loader. Alex was no very mechanically minded (pg 62). Nor was Alex endowed with a surfeit of common sense (pg 62). Alex would open up to everyone that he knew at first he was shy but over time that changed. Westerberg did not pry Alex about his family saying that he must have his reasons to not talk about them. Westerberg predicts that something must have happened between Alex and his father.  His conjecture ( pg 64) would be right both Chris McCandless and his father were both stubborn people. His father tried to control his sons life while Chris had rebeled against his father this caused the rift between them which ultimately led to Chris cutting off his parents completely.  Afterward the story goes on to tell that McCandless was celibate (pg 65). He had no romantic entanglements even though he was interested in girls Alex never pursued anything. Before leaving Carthage he had one last dinner with Westerberg and his mother. They got along so well it was sad to see Alex leave Carthage McCandless had cried before leaving which was weird because he planned on not being in Alaska very long. In the end Alex sent two postcards which was the last they heard of him. 
Analysis: Why would Chris come back to Carthage if did not intend to stay? What was the whole story on why Chris's father controled his life? Why would Chris cut them off completely and not even speak to them about his whereabouts? Why did Chris cry before leaving it gave off a weird vibe that he intended to not come back.

Multiple Letters of mail were sent out to the public. Many people had different opinions on Chris. For example "Alex is a nut (pg 71) in my book". Others would say why would someone live off the land for a few months and not be prepared. The most strident criticism (pg 71)  came in form of dense multi page epistle (pg 71) from Ambler. Alaska just thought that Chris was a dreamy half-cocked green horn (pg 72) who went into the country expecting to find all the answers to his problems. This inspired many to live out in the Wilderness such as Rosellini and Waterman. McCandless was seeker  and had an inpractical (pg 85) facination with the harsh side of nature. Unlike waterman Chris was not mentally ill, unlike McCunn Chris did not expect anyone is save him if he was in trouble. Chris was something else it is hard to say but her was described as a pilgrim. 
Analysis: Why are people following doing what Chris did? WHy do people see Chris in a negative way? Was Chris a Green horn?

Davis Gulch is a desiccated expanse (pg 88) of bald rock. Six decades ago a man named Everett Ruess a 21 year old carved his nom de plume (pg 89)  into the canyon. He was moved by Chris to inscribe (pg 89) "Alexander Supertramp/may 1992". After doing so he mysteriously disapred. 60 years later we still do not know what happend to Everett. We go on to get some backstory on Everett such as where he went to school, where he was born, etc. Ruess churned ( pg 91) so many letters he was craving for a connection with the natural world. There were so many paralells with him and Chris. They embarked on similar trips, adopted a new alias and started a new life.
Analysis: why did Everett disappear? Why would he leave his life behind like Chris? Did he get inspired by Chris?

Many People were trying to figure out who Chris was. When he died, McCandless was wearing a blue sweatshirt from a towing company when they were contacted they said they knew nothing about Chris. Many entries in McCandless's perplexing (pg 99) diary recovered with his body gave misleading information on what he was or who he was. From the diary people that that he was a field biologist this eventually led nowhere. On September 10, on Anchorage Daily news a report of a dead hiker was published. Gallien saw this and gave the troopers information about the hiker they thought it was another fake call but Gallien persisted (pg 99) giving the troopers information that was not in the article which gave them more leads to follow their skepticism (pg 99) receded (pg 99). Troopers found out that the hikers name was Alex and that he was from South Dakota troopers went there to search for next of kin. Westerberg was working where he heard from his friend that the radio was talking about a hiker that died in Alaska that sounds alot like Alex. Westerberg had given the troopers a call to give them the information that they needed to find out his next of kin. They were very skeptical at first but when Westerberg went into detail about his social security and his official name. After this troopers followed the address that matched with McCandless's social security. In the end they find Chris's half brother still living in virgina while is family had moved away. After finding out that Chris was dead his brother was left with the burden of telling their father, mother, sister, etc. 
Analysis: Just how difficult was it to find the identity of Chris.  How often would the troopers get misled from others because they thought they knew Chris?

The McCandless house is in Chesapeake Beach Maryland. We begin to dive into how Chris was as a child he was described as a rapt (pg104) eight year old and in highschool Chris would clown around while he was on vacation with his family. Walt says that he spent the most time with Chris out of all of his kids even though he would get into trouble alot. Walt is a US department of defense top secret which means he was likely involved within the government. His colleges described him as brilliant. Walt grew up in Colorado. and when he was out of college married with a kid on the way and when the Soviets launched Sputnik he had many opportunities. He first got a job at Hughes Aircraft. it was there where he met his current wife Billie he had been separated from  his previous wife recently. He and Billie fell in love and had Christopher Johnson McCandless. He was a high achiever and was different.  His personality was puzzling (pg 115) in its complexity (pg 115)

To begin we see Chris come back from his trip he is dehydrated (pg 118) and very thin. Turns out that got lost a nearly died his parents were alarmed. Even so Chris seemed like he did not care for the worries his parents had, Chris thought his parents were idiots for worrying about him. When he came back he had applied for college Chris had long hair and a beard he seemed different however he still did well with his studies making the dean's list. Chris seemed like he loved Emory College and began to settle in slowly by cleaning up his look, working for the school newspaper, etc. Chris was a very gifted man with many talents he had many aspects to his personality which baffled (pg 120) his parents. Chris also had a darker side to him characterized by monomania (pg 120). This lead  his relationship with his parents to begin deteriorating (121). This was a result from discovering a secret that his father had been doing. His father was living a double life he had been cheating on two wives and being with two families while constantly telling lies. All parties involved suffered (121)  terribly. Ever since then Chris had resented his family. He had such a big emotional (124) distance from his parents and refused to write to them. 
Analysis: Why did Chris never confront his father about his double life? Did Chris care about his other family that his father had?

She is reminiscing memories about her brother through some photographs that she has in her beach home. In these photos Chris is giving the same pensive(128), recalcitrant (128) stare. As Carine is thinking about her brother their dog Buckley was at her feet, her brother Chris was so attached to him. In fact he wanted to take Buck with him on his adventure however his parents said no due to Buck being injured due to being run over by a car. His parents think that if Buck went with them he would not have taken the same risks that he did. Carine was 5ft 8 inches  which was roughly the same height as her brother. Like her brother she was energetic (129)  and self-assured (129). Carine had made peace with her parents shortly after the disappearance of Chris, now at the age of 22 she says that their relationship is extremely good. Ten months after Chris's death Carine still grieves (129) deeply for her brother. She cannot get Chris off of her mind. In the end Carine had gotten Chris's ashes and returned it to their home. 
Analysis: How similar are Chris and Carine? Did Carine hate her parents after the death of Chris?

When he was young, he lived in Boulder, Colorado and worked as a carpenter. An avid climber, he decided to summit an extremely difficult peak called the Devils Thumb in the Alaska. An intrusion (134) of diorite sculpted by ancient glaciers. He was 23 years old younger than Chris when he decided to climb the mountain alone. He was working as a itinerant (135) carpenter making 3.50 an hour. When he had to quit his job he found it very easy because the world was rich with possibility (136). Strangers drive Krakauer to the edge of a glacier called the Stikine Ice Pack and he begins his climb. He arrives at the edge of the Devils Thumb three days later. As he climbs, a snowstorm (139) begins. He nearly falls through a crevasse before he makes it onto a glacial plateau (139) to camp. He worries that supplies he has arranged to be dropped by plane will not arrive and that he will starve to death. In the morning, a plane delivers his food. He begins to climb again in perfect weather. He climbs nearly 700 feet on sheer vertical ice. Then he fails to find any further footholds and must climb back down.
Analysis: What made the narrator made the climb the mountain? Why did the strangers help the narrator.

After three days, he gets so restless that he smokes his only marijuana (146) cigarette, which makes him hungry. He lights his stove to make oatmeal and accidentally sets his tent on fire. He stands in dismay, then admits to the reader that he borrowed the tent from his father. He recalls his father’s difficult personality and their bad relationship. He would live up to his worst expectations (147) Krakauer’s father forced him and his siblings to excel, in hopes that they would attend Harvard Medical School. Instead, the narrator became a climber and a carpenter, rejecting his father’s philosophy. He was like McCandless they had similar family issues. His father Lewis always wanted the best for his 5 kids however his aspirations (147) extended to his progeny (147). His father experienced dementia and the return of polio (149) symptoms from his youth. He became addicted to medications, which he would carry with him in a suitcase. After a suicide attempt at which Krakauer was present, his father was consigned to a psychiatric hospital. On the Stikine Ice Pack, Krakauer determines that he will try to climb the Devils Thumb again. He tells the reader that his father’s insistence on achievement left a lingering mark on him. He attempts to summit again, but a storm forces him to descend. He spirals down into self-pity and fears for his life. The wind shifts, allowing him to find his base camp again.

An RV deliveryman named Gaylord Stuckey picks him up and gives him a ride from a hot springs at the edge of the Yukon territory to Whitehorse, Alaska, after being impressed by his intelligence. After spending time together Stuckey liked Alex so much that he decided to drive the whole distance. Throughout the drive they spent three days on washboard (159) roads. They grew closer and Chris talked about his sister and family.  In Fairbanks, Stuckey urges McCandless to call his parents, though the boy demurs. McCandless visits the university and buys a book about edible plants. He also purchases a gun. Later, Stuckey searches for McCandless in the hopes of finding him again, but he is nowhere to be found. Krakauer relates that as he walked out of town, McCandless passed a satellite (161) designed by his father, Walt McCandless. On April 28, 1992, McCandless is picked up by Jim Gallien, who then drops him off outside Denali National Park.On May 1, 1992, he finds the abandoned bus and records in his journal “Magic Bus Day.” He also writes a message about his independence (163) and having successfully escaped the poison of civilization on a piece of plywood in the bus (163). He decides to stay, since the bus offers comfortable accommodations and the chance to acclimate to his new way of life. As spring passes, McCandless struggles with snowstorms and a lack of game, recording these struggles in his diary. McCandless continues his life in the bus. He shoots several small animals as the days pass and is then overjoyed to kill a moose. Butchering it and preserving its meat prove very difficult, however, and he records that his accidental wastefulness makes killing the moose one of the most tragic things he has ever done. He begins to read Thoreau’s Walden and comes to the conclusion that eating animals may be an impure or unnecessary activity.

Traveling with three companions, he uses his topographic map (173) to locate a large aluminum basket strung across the river.  The infrastructure left behind by a hydrologists (173) survey team, and allows for easy crossing of the river. Krakauer reflects that McCandless must not have wanted to know about nearby traces of civilization. He brought no map with him, which also prevented him from knowing that he could have crossed the Teklanika at another point only a few hours’ walk from his original crossing point. Krakauer and his friends then ride across the Teklanika River in the surveyor’s basket. As he is riding across, Krakauer experiences a moment of fear and exhilaration and yells before he realizes that he is in no danger and regains his composure (175). Only a few people cross the teklanika  during the spring and summer because the route is indistinct (175) and overgrown with brush. As the four hike progresses, Krakauer admits that he is glad he has people with him, and that for once in his many travels in Alaska he finds the landscape unnerving. Later that night, at around 9 PM, they reach McCandless’s bus and are struck by the bones of all the animals he shot, which are still scattered around it. Before entering the bus, Krakauer takes the opportunity to reflect at length on the presence of a nearby moose skeleton. He recalls that in his early interviews, the first people to find McCandless’s body thought it was a caribou (177). skeleton. They assumed McCandless had mistaken a caribou for a moose, which would have signified his unpreparedness. Krakauer and two others stay up late drinking and attempting to determine what kind of person McCandless was. Then they fall asleep.

He bought seeds which krakauer is convinced McCandless ate moldy wild potato seeds which are toxic (190). He describes what it might have been like for McCandless to die of starvation and quotes from his last diary entries, which become terse. On his hundredth day in the wild, McCandless leaves a jubilant note that ends in the admission he will likely die. Krakauer then outlines yet another difficulty McCandless faced. Without a map, McCandless was unable to realize that he had only to walk a few hours north to find cabins. In early August 1992, Christopher McCandless continues to try to hunt and cook food for himself. On August 12, 1992 he leaves a note and goes to forage for berries. Krakauer briefly speculates why McCandless didn’t then start an S.O.S. fire to attract a plane. No planes would have flown over the bus anyway and a fire would have harmed the wilderness McCandless loved. Krakauer then describes the symptoms associated with death by starvation and the last documents Christopher McCandless left behind. He tears out a page from a book called Education of a Wandering Man. On it, McCandless writes a goodbye message claiming that he has had a happy life. In the last lines of Into the Wild, Krakauer describes the peace in McCandless’s eyes in the last photograph he took of himself and compares him to a monk.
Analysis: Even if the fire was risky to make because it would hurt nature why didn't Chris do it? What led Chris to Starve? How bad was the seeds that he ate what effect did it have on his body?

Walt was already there in Fairbanks doing some NASA work developing an Airborn radar system for search and rescue missions. Billie had arrived Alaska a little after Walt did and they met up to go see the place. At first they took a helicopter (201)  to go to the trail however Billie wanted to take the original path that Chris took while he was here. So the miner Butch Killian who was present when Chris's body was discovered had agreed to give them a ride to the bus. However the Teklanika (201) was running to high for the truck so in the end they took the helicopter. When they arrived Billie said that she can see why Chris liked it because of how beautiful it looked, saying that it looked like the Upper Peninsula (202) Bille had entered the bus where she was sitting on the mattress where Chris died just gazing around seeing Chris's boots, writing on the walls, his toothbrush, etc. There were no tears (202). Walt and Billie had made a memorial (202) in the bus inside the door for Chris. Before leaving the bus they left some survivial supplies, food, a bible, and a note saying to call your parents. Afterward they leave glad that they came to see it.

Hunters found his body weeks later. But a mystery lingered: What exactly killed him? Krakauer has been pondering the question of his death for almost 23 years. And he's circled back again and again to one thing which was McCandless' diary. One thing that Krakauer said that was "There's one passage you just can't ignore, which is 'Extremely weak. Fault of potato seeds,." The journal entry, referencing the seeds of the Eskimo potato plant, has nagged Krakauer enough to inspire a hypotheses about the toxicity of the said seed. Krakauer's research confirms the presence of this toxin in the plant. It's the same toxin in alfalfa and jack bean, which, Krakauer writes, may have permanently paralyzed 100,000 people in the 20th century. After all these tests it is still unknown on how exactly Chris died but Krakauer believes that he would have survived if the seeds did not weaken him. 
Analysis: Why did Krakauer still want to dive into why Chris died if the coroners office confirmed that he died due to starvation? Did krakauer get that closure of knowing what exactly led to Chris's death?

When I was younger around 7 years old I remember my parents taking my siblings and I to Mexico to see my grandparents it was a fun experience. Being in the plane at first was scary but the view outside was nice just being over the clouds was so peaceful. This made me fall in love with travel I would constantly ask if and when we would go somewhere else. However, the limit of our financial situation was holding my family back from taking more trips to see other family from other states and countries. The lack of money also helped create my dream I want to go out and see what the world has to offer. To accomplish this I need to find a stable job that gives me a great source of income so I can pursue this. I can hopefully use my passion about business in the future to cover the cost of the trips that I want to take or who knows maybe travel while working online using some business that I created in the future. 

After finding that stable job and having enough money to not worry about cost I plan on traveling either alone, with friends or with family. One of the first places that I want to travel to is Japan because the culture and overall aesthetic seems so intriguing to me. Bringing people would help elevate the experience and it would also be more fun. My Odyssey has yet to begin however, I will make my dream into reality.

He stuck to his goal and did not stop what so ever. There were often times where he seemed dumb for making some decisions that were not okay and I did not like certain decisions that he made but either way his journey was fascinating. 
The Good: I love how Chris lived his own life and did not let anyone interfere with his goal of making it to Alaska and living off the land. Before he left he donated his money and belongings to charity essentially abandoning everything to achieve his goal. Chris had pushed himself mentally and physically to keep on going often not eating because he had no money or no animals to kill. 
The bad: I did not like how Chris ran away from his family I can understand leaving his father and mother because of what they did to him. Especially his father he lied to everyone living a double life and betraying the trust of his wife. However, Chris did not have to leave his sister if he loved his sister so much he would have not left her alone with his parents. Chris was known for running away from his issues I don't like that he could have confronted them and dealt with it. For example he quit his job McDonalds because of his manager making some comments about him. If he would have confronted the problem maybe things would have been different he could have kept the job and had more money maybe it would have changed the outcome if he would have died or not. 
In the end I admire how Chris had done everything he could to achieve his goals. He could have done it a little smarter to avoid a lot of problems along the way and maybe his death. RIP to Chris McCandless.
