This is similar to fascism, which attempts to encourage immoral values on the basis of it's own 'logical reasoning'.

The toad within the tree drains the tree in the same way the pregnant mother is drained by her son's complications.

He also mirrors Captain Vidal in some ways, and his dining room being similar to Captain Vidal's is a metaphorical reference point of this. While the Pale Man eats the blood of innocents literally, Captain Vidal does this in a more figurative way.

She represents as well the innocence of one untainted by the fascist ideals present in her community. Her death also served as a catalyst to end the fascist regime.
