Il a quitté l'école en cinquième secondaire. Il a débuté sa carrière en humour en 1960. Au début, il a fait des spectacles à Radio -Canada. Un peu plus tard, il prend des cours de théâtre avec Georges Groulx, François Rozel et Paul Buissonnneau. Monsieur Deschamps est excellent pour faire des monologues, c'est un grand auteur. Il a été pendant plusieurs années comédien animateur et producteur. Il a pris sa retraite de la scène en 2010. Au cours de ses 55 ans de métier, son travail a été récompensé à quelque reprises. On lui a remis un Félix-témoignage en 1987 pour souligner l'apport important de son oeuvre au monde du spectacle québécois. Il a ensuite été nommé Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec en Juin 2001. En 2011, il a reçu le Prix du gouverneur général du Canada pour les Arts du spectacle.
